The first car struck him, dragging him about fifteen feet before stopping. Dr Techtig of Knickerbocker Hospital said the man, William Goodman of 258 Henry Street Brooklyn, had a fractured skull and was in critical condition. Police doubt suicide and believe the crowd contributed to the tragedy. relatives could not be reached.
The Public Service Commission heard Clifton W Wilder report that steel cars as light as the heaviest wooden elevated car, about 24000 pounds, could be made. George Gibbs of the Pennsylvania Railroad backs feasibility. Interborough must provide enough seating on the Brooklyn branch even if ten car trains run at non rush hours.
Miss Angela Morgan writer of verse and short stories escaped injury when struck by an automobile hearse at Manhattan Street and Broadway last night. Miss Alice King sustained a concussion and possible internal injuries and was taken to Knickerbocker Hospital. Driver Alfred Machold said he did not see a traffic halt and received a summons to Harlem Court while carrying a body to an undertaker shop.
Logan M Wynkoop an embalmer living at 452 Madison Avenue was near death from pernicious anaemia. Doctors Dowd and Rett urged a blood transfusion. Twenty donors volunteered and Van Cleef Bishop of 265 West 125th Street was chosen. Over two days more than a quart of blood passed from Bishop to Wynkoop. Bishop recovered while Wynkoop began to recover.
The M. Y. and Florida Special train departs at 2 12 PM aboard four all steel elevated lighted cars operating on the Atlantic Coast Line system. Travis Daily, 1218 Broadway, advertises the service.
Emperor William announces a memorial sheet for dependents of Prussian Army soldiers who died defending the Fatherland. The decree honors faithfulness unto death and expresses sincere sympathy for the bereaved. The announcement appears in Berlin via London dated January 27.
Albany Jan 26 The sudden shift in the Attorney General’s policy on the Thaw prosecution surprised lawmakers. Jerome, serving as special deputy for the state in the first habeas corpus proceedings, worked without pay aside from 600 dollars for expenses. He has collected under 25 thousand dollars so far, despite rumors of as much as 100 thousand. The state action follows a push to remove Jerome from the Thaw case led by Republicans Knox and Stone, who are retained by the Thaw family.
London January 26 Sir Edward Grey issues a formal response to von Bethmann Hollweg remarks defending Britain’s stance on Belgian neutrality. He rebuts German claims, defends British assurances from 1911 and 1913, and asserts Germany’s responsibility for violating Belgium’s neutrality if war begins.
London reports that the Zeppelin which bombed Libau on Monday was shot down by coastal forts and sunk in the Baltic. Its crew were taken prisoners after small craft engaged and destroyed the airship. Libau, a major Baltic port, had been attacked previously on Aug. 6 and Nov. 18.
Casualties mount as the Tiger, Lion, and the damaged destroyer Meteor suffer 4 dead and 29 wounded. German air and sea attacks cripple British ships Bluecher while she sinks with guns firing. German bombers and Zeppelins hinder rescue efforts as boats launch in the aftermath.
London and Edinburgh dispatches describe a large North Sea clash with a raiding squadron that approached the English coast. Destroyers and cruisers engaged rapidly, light ships exchanged blows, and several German vessels were reported in flames as the action unfolded.
