Railroad Sold Oil Lands at Bargain in San Joaquin Valley

Julius Kruttschnitt, chairman of Southern Pacific, testified in the billion dollar fraud case that the railroad sold 640 acres in 1900 for 2.50 an acre and later paid $4 million for oil from those lands. He said he believed the lands worthless at first and that discoveries near Kern River altered the company’s stance, leading to revised leases and an internal oil division. The government accuses the rail line of benefiting from oil presence while obtaining land grants for agricultural use.
