A northwest gale plunges New York toward bitter cold with 74 mph gusts and temperatures near 5 degrees above zero. More than 2,000 homeless seek aid as police posts are abandoned and the Municipal Lodging House reaches capacity, with many sent to boats for shelter.
Dennis Godfrey Isaacs son of Godfrey Isaacs Marconi Company managing director fought a duel in Freiburg after a German insult. Isaacs slapped with a glove, four days later they dueled with foils. Isaacs sustained a forearm wound while the German was seriously wounded. Isaacs, a trained swordsman, refused to name his opponent.
A 51 year old man at St Marys Hospital underwent the first direct brain serum application in the United States to treat paresis. Dr Ellwood R Kirby led the procedure with four assistants, drilling two skull holes and injecting salvarsanic serum into each brain hemisphere to attack brain germs at the disease site. The team expects notable mental improvement given the early stage of the illness.
Queen Mary visited Norwich to see the castle museum with Princess Mary and princes. A museum attendant refused entry without surrendering an umbrella, prompting the Bishop to reveal the sovereign's identity and allow her passage with her umbrella.
Dr Howard A Kelly faces no charges as Baltimore physicians review interviews about a radium cancer cure. The Committee of Honor will report on January 23 after accepting clippings and Kelly’s reply described as a very decent letter.
Baltimore January 12 Rep Robert G Bremner of New Jersey with $100000 in radium treatment shows notable improvement. Friends say he can now move his head forward and back and side to side for the first time in months as doctors continue the cancer therapy.

Most national banks in the city plan annual stockholder meetings to discuss joining the Federal Reserve system. Representative Foster of Illinois and Ferris of Oklahoma introduced bills to segregate public domain lands containing radium ores such as carnotite and pitchblende for government development. The Foster bill, printed in The Times, was prepared by the Interior Department and endorsed by Secretary Lane. Hearings are planned with Lane and others expected to testify.
Thomas Fortune Ryan praised President Wilson for steering the Currency bill through Congress. He called Wilson the country’s savior and urged national banks to join the Federal Reserve system, noting his own bank’s support.
President Menocal in Havana refuses to extend bids on the 10 million dollar Cuban loan despite bankers urging at least a 30 day delay. The report says J P Morgan & Co offered to lend Cuba funds until the loan floats, but the administration cannot accept aid without congressional authorization. Moe Yaeger, 25, chauffeur for Flohr & Harris, was crushed and burned when his coat caught in a truck engine on Stanton Street. After a half hour, police and fire crews freed him by removing oil and lifting him through a trap door. He was taken to Gouverneur Hospital with severe injuries and low chances of recovery.
New York society figure Miss Eugenie May Ladenburg is a patient at St. Luke's Hospital suffering from a severe cold contracted last summer. Her condition has shown improvement, and she previously appeared at Devereux Milburn and Nancy Steele's wedding. Her father Adolf Ladenburg drowned at sea nearly nineteen years ago. she will come into an estate of about $10 million at age 21.
Raymond V. Morris of New Haven, Comn., flew four times in the smallest American built flying boat at nearly 100 mph near Hammondport New York. The monoplane boat, designed by Glenn H. Curtiss, features a cigar hull and ash framework with sails thin mahogany layers, exposing only the pilot’s head through a tiny deck opening.

Dr Giannini Italian government official in charge of emigrants aboard the steamship Berlin bound from Genoa to New York was shot seven times and killed by an insane emigrant named Cupertino. The body was sent ashore here but local law prevents handing the killer to land authorities. he will be taken to New York.

The main conduit opened again last July after prior paroxysm in 1906 killed many, the crater floor collapsed, and now a new mouth about 50 feet across belches dense smoke as activity climbs beyond observatory expectations.
In Babylon New York on January 12 19xx the deer keeper Patrick Horon forty four years old was found dead in the Edwin Hawley deer pen at West Islip by superintendent John Williams. The body showed two fatal wounds from a buck whose rampage killed all other deer except one doe. Horon had defied prior warnings and laughed at caution. He leaves a rheumatic wife and a daughter with consumption three grown sons and Emma Cameron owner of the Hawley estate.
