Jeffersons Nephew Jackson Dies by His Own Hand
Charles Jackson, actor and nephew of Joseph Jefferson, died in his Hotel Gerard room on West Forty Fourth Street by strangling himself with a trunk strap. Despondent over inability to memorize lines for The Witching Tour, he had been out of work eight months and briefly cheered by an engagement with the Shuberts before falling back into despair. He was 45, with ties to the Jefferson and Parker theatrical families, and will be interred in Cypress Hills vault by Frank Jefferson.
