Fire destroys Beard's Stores as Idlewild, St Dunstan burn
A fire started by the excursion steamer Idlewild near Beard's Winter Farm on the Brooklyn breakwater spread to the transatlantic steamer St Dunstan. Explosions followed as nitrate of soda and jute stored in Beard's 500 foot long buildings caught blaze. One man fell overboard but was rescued. the St Dunstan's crew of 38 escaped. Fire raged with 2:30 AM flames and strong winds fanning the blaze.
Four Die In Tenement Fire On East 113th Street
Four people including two women and two young children perished in a five story tenement blaze at 357 East One Hundred Thirteenth Street. The fire started in the cellar and spread up through the rear air shaft trapping residents on the third to fifth floors. Rescue attempts saved others as firemen battled the flames and a neighbor aided with evacuations. The damage was about $4,000.
