British Bid Lowest for Our Navy Shells
On January 4 the British Hadfield's Limited of Sheffield was the lowest bidder for 14 and 16 inch armor piercing projectiles for new dreadnoughts. No award yet by Secretary Daniels. Hadfield's offered 3,000 16 inch shells at 513 dollars each, delivered in sixteen months, about 200 dollars below leading American bids. For 14 inch shells delivery would be eleven months versus twenty two to forty two months by U S bidders. Prices include delivery in the United States with duties paid by Hadfield's. Other bids: Bethlehem Steel 4,000 16-inch in thirty six months at unknown price. Crucible Steel 4,000 in thirty six months at 768 each. Midvale Steel 5,000 in twenty four months at unknown. Steel and Ordnance 2,000 in thirty two months at unknown. Bethlehem Steel also bid 900 14-inch Class B shells in twenty two months at 310 each.
