In central London a two man anarchist siege against police and troops lasted hours. A woman aided the operation and two men were found dead in a burning house believed to contain Fritz Swarrs, while the other principal remained unidentified. Over 1,000 officers took part in the confrontation near Commercial Road.
Solis and Alva rez, bandits haunting Santa Clara Camaguey areas, went to the home of Pedro Blanco near Agroyo Blanco and Ciezo de Avila. They entertained, ate, and left unharmed, while rurales arrived shortly before them. Meanwhile a kidnapped boy’s fate remains uncertain with belief he is dead. A veteran named José Redas was found shot in the woods near Diego.
Walter B. Rodgers a collegian army deserter and magazine writer fled Waterville Maine fearing army officers who he claims would kill him if found. He described desertion after a ball incident with a drunken captain and said he shoved the officer with a shovel before escaping. Rodgers lived quietly in Maine with friends unsure if he will return.
The Maine wreck debris surfaced by a dredge includes two ribs hand bones and small bones as researchers gather more parts. Coal bunkers and three inch shells were found apart from the hull while crew await pay grievances and continue hull work despite questions about the explosion. Naval officers caution that bunkers outside the wreck do not prove whether an external explosion or a magazine blast caused the damage.

The Court of Appeals in Albany upheld a franchise tax on New York Central Railroad's $30,000,000 January 1507 stock issue, ruling the tax must be on the whole stock outstanding at year end rather than the average stock for the year. Chief Justice Cullen wrote the opinion, rejecting the claim that tax should be based on average stock and dividends.

Mrs Joseph B McConnell of Saratoga discovered a $75 diamond in the crop of a chicken prepared for New Year dinner. The gem belonged to her mother Mrs K V Lutz of Guttenberg New Jersey, who lost it last summer during a visit. Mrs McConnell had searched crops since the loss, and yesterday's rooster proved the last in the Summer brood.
In Chicago on January 3 Judge Kohlsaat ruled the government may dismiss the civil suit against the National Packing Company. J Ogden Armour and others indicted packers failed to block criminal prosecution under the Sherman anti trust law, rejecting their claim that the dissolution case was a contempt hearing.
Speaker Cannon received a letter postmarked Bombay claiming a Bombay banker left him 250000 dollars for a friendly deed years ago. He laughed it off saying he knows no such banker and dismissed the note as rubbish, circulating it as a crank letter in his office.
John C. Ruff a lawyer of 80 St. Marks Place was elected yesterday to replace Alderman Sohmer who resigned to become Secretary to his father William Sohmer the new State Controller. Ruff is a Tammany man. Alderman Finnegan introduced a resolution to close all city offices at 4 PM, with several new officials extending hours to 5 PM.
