A severe storm hit England causing extensive damage from Liverpool to Monmouthshire. Shop windows broken, houses unroofed, trees and wires down, and coastwise shipping feared hurt. Also notes an Augusta Special rail advert with Pullmans and dining car service.
Robert N. McNeely American Consul at Aden was aboard the torpedoed liner Persia. Born in Waxhall North Carolina, he had a long career as teacher, mail carrier, lawyer and local official before joining the U S Consular Service. He sailed from New York to England aboard the Holland liner Rotterdam and joined the Persia voyage after London stay.
London January 1 a British liner the Persia bound for Bombay was torpedoed and sunk off Crete in the Mediterranean. Four lifeboats escaped with about 160 passengers and crew from 250 to 300 aboard most perished. American consul at Aden Robert McNeely was aboard with his brother. Several Americans were among the passengers including Charles Grant Boston and Edward Rose Denver. The ship carried heavy mail and little cargo. Consul Skinner seeks confirmed lists and fate of Americans aboard as details lag due to slow cables. The Admiralty has given no passenger-by-passenger information.
