City faces large tax and arrears, Grout states
Controller Grout releases a detailed report showing city arrears totaling 65 million dollars through Jan 1 1902. After deducting 19.1 million in 1901 real estate and 6.8 million 1901 personal taxes, net past 1901 arrears amount to about 39.75 million, with 32.3 million due before 1901 to be collected and possibly enforced by sale of in arrears property. Suit Against Stewart Estate Dismissed as Speculative
In a suit against the estate of A T Stewart died April 10 1876 the court denied a motion to appoint a commission to take testimony in Ireland. Justice Scott said the case appeared speculative and not distinguishable from dismissed actions. He noted the plaintiff counsel had represented others in similar suits and sold shares of the estate. The court signaled a end to vexatious litigation against the estate.

Opera Singer Nina Diva Faces $6000 Diamond Replevin
Deputy Sheriff Rinn filed a writ of replevin for diamonds valued at $6,000 pledged with H Stein pawn broker at 56 West Thirty-first Street by Nina Von Erlanger known as Nina Diva an opera singer who recently came from Europe. The jewelry allegedly pawned under the name Roeder in December. Reinhardt, the plaintiff, demanded return but was refused. Diva is reportedly in Europe. Seven pieces were listed but five matched the description and were stored in the sheriff’s safe.
