Dispatches describe Sherman’s march cutting Orangeburg and the coast operations. Beauregard’s forces retreat toward Columbia as Hardee commands Charleston defenses. Reports from Philadelphia relay that Union cavalry push toward North Carolina while Confederate rail and telegraph links near Charleston are disrupted.
From our own correspondent dated February 11 1863 reports Union forces under Gen Scarmustrazzmmi crossed from Folly Island to James Island. A bold assault captured three redoubts and thirty seven Confederates including a South Carolina major, with casualties on both sides. Rebels reportedly defended strong works on James Island as Union commanders planned further moves aided by gunboats and mortar schooner fire.
Dispatch from Sursa's era notes the Confederate army moving from Savannah toward Sister's Ferry, with Gen. Baxaban's divisions and Twentieth and Fifteenth Corps advancing. Describes torpedo hazards, river crossings at Staters Ferry, corduroy roads, and enemy activity, plus reports of supplies and anticipated movements toward Augusta and Branchville.
From the Richmond Dispatch February 14 reports say MuemMan’s forces crossed the Edisto west of Branchville and moved toward the Columbia Branch Railroad. Our troops retired toward Columbia as skirmishing continued with no general engagement and rumors place Beavancaan near the Saline, likely to retreat beyond the Santee. The Charleston Courier notes no official front news, while reports from Orangeburg and Williston indicate railroad disruptions and prisoner captures amid cautious editorial remarks in the Columbia Guardian urging calm and readiness.
The Confederate report describes Union forces under Brig. Gen. Haron bivouacked near the Cheriestog and Savannah Railroad crossing the Combahee River, advancing toward Charleston while the enemy retires. A late Sunday night message from James Island notes Union picket incursions, strong enemy forces, and a disrupted attack on Battery Omble. Local dispatches say Charleston reports are lacking since.
The report describes Sazannat leading a force through Georgia toward Branchville and possibly Augusta or Charleston. Telegraph rumors claim a column is moving on Augusta but remain unconfirmed as communications with Augusta are cut and the exact movements from Congbeaton and toward Columbia are unclear.

From the Richmond Despatch and Georgia papers, Feb 14, reports on Mr Lincoln's Congress address and the so-called peace conference. Washington offices are praised for their terms, while Georgia press notes the absence of peace meetings and ongoing war mobilization. The Rebel Congress debates pay for two months of Confederate ad hoc soldiers and the Treasury’s limits. A bill on enlisting slaves is advanced, with manumission tied to faithful service and state consent.
Richmond papers report feeble attempts to stir Southern pride amid war news. Meetings in Petersburg and Lynchburg express public sentiment on Confederate fortunes, with Raleigh papers waving white flags. Miscellany covers Mossy’s men raid on Williamsburgh and Confederate prisoner returns, plus troop movements near Brentaville and a truce steamer with 1,080 Confederate prisoners.
Special dispatches report the House Military Committee investigating wartime press censorship. The War Department replies that censorship was applied equally, aiding military operations. Other items note French defeats in Sonora and reorganizations of the Kentucky and Cumberland military districts.
The Senate debated petitions for naval pay raises, the American Colonization Society aid, and a Philadelphia port of entry bill. A naval academy rebuilding plan and a proposed admiralty board were discussed, with costs for Annapolis improvements and a Mississippi station.
