Four cable messages from Havana urge tariff concessions to aid Cuba with reciprocity. Marching groups praise The New York Times for supporting petitions, warn of financial catastrophe and labor suffering, request continued campaigning to avert bankruptcy.
The Ways and Means Committee will begin consideration of Cuban reciprocity next Wednesday. The War Tax Reduction bill will be out of the House by then. The panel has no firm program beyond resolving how to relief Cubans while not lowering tariff duties. The only bill before them is Harris of Minnesota’s tariff change and rebate proposal for Cuban planters.
The Rev J B Carruthers of Berlin N H says he caused County Solicitor Parsons to subpoena Gov Jordan to testify against liver dealer A A Trafton. A subpoena was sent via sheriffs but the Governor had already left Concord and did not appear in court.
Chicago, Feb 14. George Arthur Flavelle of Chicago and Charles M. Carrington of New York are reported dead in unexplored Venezuelan jungles. J. C. McGill arrived from Caracas with word the explorers’ outfits were found with Indian porters near the coast. Flavelle died in rapids on the Paragua River north of San Rafael. Carrington, too weak to fly, is said to have perished awaiting rescue.

Fire destroys the Trimmer Building in Morristown, New Jersey. Clarence Trimmer suffocated attempting a window escape, two women and a baby suffer clothing fires, and residents flee amid flames. J Fred Runyon and James help evacuate family members. total loss estimated at 50,000 dollars.
A chimney fire at John Jacob Astor's Fifth Avenue home on the 1st night caused alarm but no damage. Police and firefighters found soot in the flue, cleared it, and avoided water use. Col and Mrs Astor were away at the opera. Battalion Chief Breslin warned of a possible $10 fine for chimney cleaning violation.
