MONTAUK ENGAGES RAMS IN CHARLESTON BLOCKADE ACTION
From Our Own Correspondent dated February 2 1863 reports Confederate iron clad rams with steam propulsion attacking Union gunboats Mercedita and Keystone State off Charleston harbor. Mercedita surrenders after ram embeds its iron prow. Keystone State disabled but towed away. Casualties include several killed and many wounded aboard both Union vessels. Princess Royal captured nearby adding to Union losses and ongoing blockade tensions.

Report on Charleston naval engagement by Rear Admiral DuPont
Rear Admiral DuPont reports the February 1863 Confederate attack on the Union squadron off Charleston. Ironclads Mercedita Keystone State and supporting ships endured heavy shellfire, boiler damage, and multiple alarums before the rebels withdrew. Mercedita and Keystone State suffered major casualties. Mercedita was scuttled or surrendered with crew paroled.
Loss of the Isaac Smith reported near Slone Inlet
From Park Royal on February 5 1889 dispatches report two gunboats engaging near Slone Inlet with heavy firing heard in the direction. Commodore McDonovan arrived at Royal early and the situation follows up to page eight.
