From Washington the Senate debates the Post-office Deficiency Bill and franking privilege extinction. Reports note committee inquiries into Mr Warm’s spending on polling, political payments, and questions refused. Other items include Major Choos, Peru claims, Papal negotiations, naturalized citizen rights, and California land grants.
The Senate debated a joint resolution to remove obstructions at the Mississippi mouth and considered a Post Office Deficiency bill. Amendments focused on interest payments to contractors, sub contractors, and re forming franking privileges. Several members opposed adding broad patronage inquiries and debated timing of reforms. The session adjourned after executive consideration.
AP dispatch from Washington notes Moroccan fighting with 66 000 Moors at Castellegos. Col Tas-Bará, young brother of the Spanish minister in Washington, leads Huszar and is wounded as Spain presses the war, aided by heavy rains and a growing force of 80 000. The Senate delays Post Office bill, mail contractors urge immediate action, and inauguration plans for a statue of Wasamaros on the 22d are discussed amid delegations. Congress eyes inviting the New York Seventh Regiment to ceremonies. Doorkeeper Manautan and assistant Gooprxow appointed for House posts. Employment jitters show in Washington as many seek patronage. The President names Ensign Francisco Fallon Consul-General of Uruguay in New York. The Criminal Court sentences William Borp to 14 years for kidnapping two Black residents. Gov Leveman returns, Judge Rows named Treasurer, Printer of the House race continues with nominations for editor and publishers. Col Fonmar’s appointments delayed. he leaves for Philadelphia.
Prof Loyazigo cites revised calculations predicting the great comet of 1556 will reappear in the current year. French astronomers are also watching for the celestial event, with sighting hoped during the Falls of 1860 if calculations hold.
On Tuesday the convention elected delegates at large to the Charleston Convention: Fernando Wood, John A. Green Jr., Gideon J. Tucker, Joshua R. Babcock, with alternates Beardsley, Soutter, Haggerty, Chamberlain. Mayor Wood spoke on national danger, sectional tensions, and urged a unified national party to preserve the Union amid the rise of anti slavery sentiment and partisan disruption.
A heated address critiques the Black Republican Party and Northern abolitionism, arguing slavery's expansion is tied to economic interests and warning of union dissolution. Delegates vow a national platform, choosing leaders for a November race while stressing unity and anti abolitionist themes.
Cuautustown February 7. Nine witnesses testified, centering on Hauer as a party member with hair color disputed: some say red, others light. Hauer now appears with darker hair, possibly dyed. Rev Newton of Vermont attended court as a visitor, having appeared before the Senate investigating committee. About forty witnesses were summoned for the Commonwealth, though not all will be examined.
In Hannasvrrts Kentucky on Tuesday February 7 a man entered Duncan and Baotagza store with a lighted bomb in a basket of eggs. The device exploded blowing the shop apart and injuring several people including Hos. Wx. Sreaart C. B. Duncan J. G. Newcan Jos. Reasoe and Ww. Brenger. Mr. Davipeon was mortally wounded and suspected to have intended to kill Sreaarrr due to the Lowe tragedy fallout.
The Santa Fé Mail from Pawnee Fork reached the city today. The escort that departed Fort Union on the 27th alt. had not yet arrived at Pawnee Fork when this mail left. Five mails were detained at Pawnee, awaiting escort. No Indians were sighted by this party. Plains snow was heavy and the weather intensely cold.
At this point 200 miles below Pittsburgh the river is ten feet deep and rising. Boats depart daily to all river landings below.
Nauw Hiven Conn February 7 reports Judge Cnuglrs A Ingersoll of the United States District Court became dying tonight at 9 o clock from a stomach rheumatism related illness. The notice outlines a grave health event affecting the judge.
In Acosta Ga on February 7 a fatal clash erupted after officials tried to arrest Jonn W Walked. He shot merchant Joan OWens in Waynesborough, then shot and killed a sheriff’s posse member and fatally wounded his wife and child.
Mayoral election in Lancaster on Tuesday February 7 produced a heavy vote. Laxperson a Democrat is elected mayor of Bernows with a 189 vote majority, a Democratic gain of 500 over last October. Also notes the death of Reverend Caamone Watnes, formerly of New England, an eminent Episcopal clergyman.
Fragmentary notice notes Adams Express delivers journals dated from January to February via mail route through New Orleans. It mentions the period from the second of January to the first of February and references distant journals arriving every day.
