A Richmond newspaper summary reports a rebel victory at Charleston Harbor with the blockade raised. It notes a steamer sent to Nassau to convey the announcement and that British and French consuls were notified of the blockade opening.
Dispatches describe the Mackwater engagement where Federals, numbered from ten to fifteen thousand, clashed with Confederates under Gen. Patton at dawn. Artillery duels preceded an hour of heavy fighting, with Union casualties including Col. Poacis and Capt. Donwine. Southern reports claim heavy enemy losses and continued Confederate activity in the region.
A Times dispatch reports Charleston faced a potential attack as the blockade was not to be interrupted. Cape Charlos and crew clung to the Tigging when distress sent Captain Hoxt to dispatch a steamer for relief. One other schooner aground near Old Point and a bar between Sewall's Point. Monitor aground possibly. Steam-rage to assist schooners. The steamer sent to save the crew of the sunken tohooney on the Middle Ground has not yet returned. Southern papers report a rebel victory at Nansemond near Suffolk on Saturday.
Reports from Fort Donelson describe a heavy clash with Rebels repelled and strong Union losses. Dispatches cite cavalry actions at Nashville and Donelson with estimated Rebel casualties around 200 killed and 500 wounded, Union losses listed as two killed forty one wounded or missing.
From Vicksburgh report dated Thursday February five at 1 PM. Our base at Vicksburgh engages crevashees to keep water out of camp as the old canal runs seventeen feet deep. Rebel force estimated at sixty thousand, the largest mobilization to defend the position. A thousand negroes are to be sent from Memphis to work on the causeway.
OCH CAIRO CORRESPONDENCE reports Union forces within three miles of Wickd bargh-Hebel batteries at Delaw the town, with forces under Capt. Wemrtron Surti and Capt. G Q. Wartz engaging Confederate positions. Rebel fire from below the town continues as federal boats maneuver, with casualties including Col Brewsar killed and cannonading toward Vicksburgh. The Horner lands Mosquito fleet boats near Island No. 10, salvaging cotton and contrabands while awaiting clearance to advance.
