Tokyo sends denials through Viscount Hayashi and Aoki, stating Japan’s pacific stance and accusing Western press rumors of provoking false war talk. Embassy reports no serious threat, but notes misperceptions abroad and steps to counteract them.
Tatsumoto Nosse, Japanese Consul General in Canada, says there will be no conflict between the United States and Japan at this time. Albany February report says Kelsey of the State Insurance Department will not accept the resignations of Inspectors Kinkaed and Marks over the New York Life Trustees vote count. He warns resignation could cause election confusion. Counting aims to finish in three weeks, with about 80,000 ballots possible per day.
Judge Lawton of the Superior Court ordered two special writs of attachment for 500000 dollars each on the property of Thomas W. Law son Albert C. Burrage and Charles D. Burrage held by Eliot Bank Shawmut Bank and Hayden Stone Co The actions named by Henry G Runkle of New York date to 1903 and 1905 and allege he and others were induced to invest funds including his 20000 dollars to acquire mining properties in Mexico and Arizona seeking an accounting.

Washington Feb 4 Mrs Alice Roosevelt Longworth who has been ill with influenza stayed home today showing much improvement. She received an early visit from Mrs Longworth’s stepdaughter who came to inquire after her health.
A $600 monument will mark the grave of Mrs Mary Rogers who was hanged at Windsor on December 8 1905 for the 1902 Bennington murder of her husband. The donor is a wealthy Vermont woman. Eugene Sullivan of Barre orders the dark Barre granite eight foot tall monument eight foot six inch square base weighing three tons. Mrs Rogers was buried at Hoosick Falls.
The Norwich Line steamship City of Lowell plunges into the Ward Line steamer Cienfuegos near Battery crossing. Both slow moving in a snow storm. City of Lowell sustains a starboard side hole above the water line and continues to New York. Cienfuegos anchors off Liberty Island with minor damage.
The Apawamis Golf Clubhouse at Rye-on-the-Sound was nearly destroyed by fire discovered around 3 pm. The main building, built recently at a cost of 15000 dollars, burned despite efforts of few clubmen and servants who saved liquor stock furniture and paintings. Firemen cut ice to access water from a nearby brook. The club, one of the county’s oldest with more than 600 members including prominent New Yorkers, suffered extensive damage.

A mine explosion at Mine No. 25 of the Davis Coal and Coke Co in Thomas near Elkins West Virginia kills twenty five to thirty miners, most foreigners. Five men entering the shaft were recovered dead, leading to belief all others inside perished.
