Senator Bard of California alleges Catholic influence over Republican districts to secure a $200,000 annual trust fund for Catholic Indian schools. He cites Dr. N. L. Scharf of the Catholic University and a letter from a Catholic bishop as proof of plans to sway votes and re elect a congressman.
Miss Agnes Long, bookkeeper for Berry & Son, was knocked down and robbed of more than $4,000 on Windsor Avenue at Avon Street while heading to deposit firm funds. Albert Johnson, a baker who witnessed the assault, pursued and captured a man who gave the name Joseph Sullivan. The money was recovered.

President Stafford and Vice President Best are in the south for the discussion. Treasurer Jurgensen declined comment.
Rome report on Prof Waldstein of Cambridge proposing an honorary world committee to promote excavations at Herculaneum. Minister Orlando said the idea stemmed from artistic enthusiasm and would not alter Italy’s control, law, or dignity in archaeology. The government will proceed only under Italian authority with no concessions.
Judge Peaslee in N H Superior Court orders the New York Security and Trust Company to pay 290 360 to Charles E Kidd and G Henry Whitcomb in a long running suit over stock of the Massachusetts Construction Company tied to street railway construction funds. The decree splits 213 010 to Kidd and 77 250 to Whitcomb and requires delivery of their preferred stock certificates upon receipt of the judgment.

Hege Charles Nickell and Albany Mayor William Davis with perjury or false affidavits.

Albany dispatch reports a proposed constitutional amendment to strip the Legislature of power to pass ordinances for streets and local improvements in cities. Sponsored by Senator Martin and Assemblyman Tompkins, the measure ties to the 1877 Tilden Commission and enjoys Citizens' Union support and Mayor McClellan’s sanction. If approved, it would go to voters in 1907 with effect not before 1908.
Mobile Alabama January 31 report says President Zelaya aims to expel clergy after a priest banishment. Eighteen priests reportedly sent from Leon to a port for passage on the German ship Memphis for wearing religious garb in public.
Alfred Ames Howlett banker and early Syracuse business figure dies at eighty four from brain disease. Born near Syracuse he led milling packing and banking ventures and served as director in many local enterprises including railroads. He leaves a considerable fortune.
Announcement of a plan to unify the Michigan Central and the Big Four under single management. M. E. Ingalls and H. B. Ledyard elected chairmen of the boards, with Chauncey Depew resigning to allow Ledyard’s election. New finance and transport officers named to standardize accounts and operations. Wall Street questions whether antitrust action will follow.
The Princess Victoria, daughter of King Edward, had an appendicitis operation at Buckingham Palace this morning. Sir Frederick Treves performed the procedure. A bulletin reports the operation as favorable with the princess progressing very satisfactorily. She arrived in London on January 27 to prepare for the surgery. Born in 1868.
Fraulein Reubke of the Court Theater in Munich was sent a bonbon box with a note to open it before her scene in Berg schmiede. She opened it late in the performance and an adder bit her dress. Attendants killed the snake and she recovered enough to finish the show.
The Rev. Dr. I N W Irvine, deposed by the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, announces he will drop all ecclesiastical and legal actions against Bishop Talbot to prevent further church scandal. He accuses Talbot of using money and influence to block his case and offers full pardon.
In Springfield Illinois on January 31 ex Senator Riley struck Senator Daniel A Campbell in the upper house after adjournment. Campbell and colleagues ejected Riley who was later arrested. Riley formerly chaired the Senate Civil Service Committee two years ago and blamed Campbell for his defeat.

Anson G McCook Jr reports a burglar in the third floor room at 33 West Fifty fourth Street. He grabbed a revolver and fired twice striking at the intruder who then leaped from a window and fled.

A fire at the home of coffee merchant John Dorsett on Kenilworth Place near St Marys Hospital Jamaica drove smoke into the facility. Dr James Rourke and two attendants helped contain the blaze while sisters and nurses kept patients calm. Mrs Dorsett recovered a stolen strong box containing 300 from the smoke and police recovered it. Damages estimated at 3000.
Mrs. William J. Blickensderfer's counsel leaves Hoosick Falls for Montpelier after a telegram says Gov. Bell will hear pleas for clemency in the case of Mrs. Mary Rogers sentenced to death for murdering her husband. Windsor county officials plan to petition for mercy. a commutation or stay could allow an appeal to Vermont's Supreme Court.
The aged mother of actress Isadore Rush has not been told of her daughter's death in California three months ago. Family fears news could cause her death while the daughter’s letters to her mother, read weekly, had kept the illusion of a living connection as the company tours the West.
