Dresden reports Crown Princess fled during Dec 11 12, vanished from Salzburg after accompanying Crown Prince to Emperor Franz Joseph’s castle. Police across Europe search, fearing suicide or abduction as rumors swirl about court intrigues and past royal calamities.
The Crown Princess of Saxony vanished prompting Vienna to race to Geneva for clues. Archduke Ferdinand and a court chamberlain sought her but found nothing while reports cite mental distress and domestic quarrels with her husband and an actress. Her brother Archduke Leopold Ferdinand is said to be with her.
Princess Louise Antoinette Marie Crown Princess of Saxony, daughter of Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany and Princess Alice of Bourbon and Parma, married in Vienna on November 2 1891 to Prince Frederick Augustus of Saxony. They have five children and a history of misfortune shadows the Habsburg line since 1848.

Mrs. Hobart Chatfield Chatfield Tay lor wife of a noted author and daughter of ex Senator Farwell is learning bookbinding. She has a studio and has produced creditable work. Harry Selfridge joked about her new trade to the Bookbinders Union, which has asked her to join or be labeled an enemy of union labor. She may take out a card and counters with claims that Selfridge employs non union waitresses in Marshall Field s restaurant.
In Pittsburg on December 22 a Lincoln Hotel clerk received a call from someone pretending to be actor E H Sothern asking the clerk to watch for a suit he ordered. A messenger then delivered a suitcase and collected $47, later claimed not ordered. The case contained two bricks.

A Burlington Denver to Deadwood train, blocked by a blizzard, spent 24 hours without food after becoming buried under a twenty foot snowdrift fifteen miles south of Sidney Nebraska. A brakeman trekked eighteen hours to Sidney for aid, relief trains cleared the route in six hours, then fifty shovelers spent ten hours uncovering the train and releasing passengers. Mails and westbound service suffered delays but tracks are now clear.
Baltimore police seek identity of David Waldo Pierce alias F G Garrett F G Morrison and Frank Morris as he faces charges for attempting to obtain attire under false pretenses. A woman linked to him was arrested in Washington. They failed to pay hotel bills and await trial. Detectives found three photos including one inscribed From Pearl and another Corn Field Fuller August 12 Boston Mass. A letter from Miss Pearl is on record.
Walter Owen of New York City lies in serious condition at Dobbs Ferry Hospital after being attacked by two unknown men along the New York Central Railroad in Tarrytown. Police officer Springfeel was shot in the arm during a pursuit of the suspects who fled on a passing freight train.
Baltimore December 22. More than 1,000,000 of Alexander Shaw's 2,000,000 estate is bequeathed to education charities relatives and employees. Notable gifts include 50,000 to Women’s College of Baltimore 10,000 to Pennington Seminary 5,000 to Union Protestant Infirmary and 5,000 to the Home for Aged of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Clerks and mansion servants receive 10,000 2,900 and other amounts with shares for all long serving staff. John K. Shaw receives 150,000 and about 500,000 is placed in trust for other family members. Shaw was a coal mine owner shipper and Republican.

Discharged soldiers aboard the transport Thomas rioted after leaving Nagasaki. Company H of the Second Infantry and Lt. Prescott intervened with revolvers, beating back rioters. Ninety mutineers were placed in the guardhouse.
A Quebec conference of provincial leaders resolved to press Ottawa for changes in Confederation to widen provincial powers and revenues. They urged using the 1865 census for per capita payments, cutting provincial aid to 60 cents for smaller provinces, and sharing the Halifax fisheries award of 3 5 million with the provinces. In attendance were premiers of Quebec, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, with Ontario’s premier sending regrets.
In Cleveland on December 22 the planned meeting at Senator Hanna’s home to pick a Republican candidate for governor did not occur and likely won’t. Hanna plans to seek re election and declines to intervene between Gen Charles Dick and Col Myron Herrick. He warned he would not participate and joked about locking them in a room to settle their dispute.
In Detroit on December 22, Drs. James M. Peebles, Walter T. Bobo, and Charles M. Greene of the People’s Institute of Health in Battle Creek were convicted by a federal jury of violating postal laws. They advertised a mail order “cure” for illnesses, seeking money by fraud. A 30 day stay of proceedings delays sentencing.
Rochester. Dec 22 The Internal Revenue Service warns druggists and confectioners that after Jan 1 a 14 percent special tax applies to those selling soda fountain drinks containing distilled spirits of wine or fermented beverages. The move targets claret soda and claret phosphate. For months officials examined these drinks and revoked prior allowances for flavoring stock with alcoholic products.
A man calling himself George F. Hayes, who travels in Pullman cars and is accused of robbing churches for candlesticks, was arrested in Omaha. Hayes claims service in the Philippines and that he was Assistant Secretary of the Bowery Y M C A in New York, though no Bowery record supports this.
London reports deny Roosevelt acceptance of Venezuela arbitration invitation. The Hague tribunal is cited as preferred by the President, with officials noting European powers have not objected to arbitration and would welcome his role. Hay and Roosevelt discuss the matter amid ongoing tensions.
