In Oklahoma City Taft’s keynote speech denounced Oklahoma State Constitution critics and sparked talk of a Taft presidential bid. Supporters gathered after his talk envision a Taft bandwagon with delegations, while Taft remained silent on his candidacy.
Dr C H Powell died at his Greenwich home in his sixtieth year. A surgeon with a long career, he studied at Alabama, Virginia, and New York City schools. He served in the Confederate Army and later held multiple medical society leadership roles in New York. He published extensively on brain surgery and carbolic acid in infection treatment.
Mounted patrolman James Reilly stops a runaway carriage with Charles Olesons and family aboard near Broadway and 168th Street. Deputy Commissioner Bugher, witnessing the effort, hails Reilly and praises his skill learned in the army as the carriage is guided to safety at 181st Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The occupants are shaken but unharmed. The rig is taken to the station.
A passenger on the French liner La Touraine identified as Henry Spenffoeben, a supposed submarine mine expert, arrived from Havre with secret duties for the Navy Department. He concealed his mission, carried strange apparatus, spoke French, and proceeded to Washington via Hotel Lafayette and the Congressional Limited.
Workmen at Vertin’s Hear Pedicskill near Ossining reach 89 feet without hitting a cat foundation while drilling for the Catskill aqueduct. A red colored sample is recovered from a stratum at the 50 foot test, sent to New York for analysis to determine its nature and origin.
At South Ferry Naragansett Pier a touring car driven by Frid Sandstrom overturned at a sharp curve, killing W Waldo Merrill and Sandstrom instantly. Frederick Milliken and family injured. brakes blamed as car hit a stone wall at about forty five miles per hour. Merrill, a Boston stock broker, and Sandstrom, a chauffeur, were fatally injured.
A touring car driven by Carl Hanna, grandson of Senator Mark Hanna, collided with a fish wagon on Ocean Avenue in Ben Bright New Jersey. Eight people were injured, including Hanna who was pinned under the steering gear, and Daniel Horner who drove the fish wagon. Willis Horner was thrown thirty feet, Cyril Carmichael broke ribs, and Miss L Sega and her father suffered serious injuries.
A collision between an automobile and a horse-drawn runabout left a young woman with serious injuries and her escort with lesser injuries on Thompson Avenue near Grover Street. The runabout carried Nelson St. John Boncaster of 136 Flushing Avenue and Miss Margaret Oakes of 516 Fifth Street. the touring car was driven by Eugene Credale and owned by Walter Rosen. The runabout was wrecked and the horse injured. Miss Oakes and Mr. Boncaster were transported for treatment.
B Frank Rees was killed in Chattanooga Tennessee when his car plunged into a fifteen foot embankment after a wind blew his hat off and he jerked the steering wheel to avoid losing control. He was a Columbia graduate and a member of the boat crew at the stationery house. Norman Rees of Brooklyn is his brother.
In Bernardsville New Jersey eight year old Margaret Kuhlewind killed when Grant B Schrey’s touring car struck a pole. Her grave was opened revealing mutilation of the body. The crash also killed driver Thomas Clark and Ralph Hazelton died later. three others injured including the child’s sister.
James F. Connell, owner of the Amherst Hotel, surrendered a satchel at West Forty seventh Street Police Station containing two $11,000 bonds from the International Motor Vehicle Company and a $2,000 bank book. The items were in the name of W B Allison and the Peoples National Bank of Hackensack. Police weigh if owner was robbed as Lukes from Chicago claimed to have taken the satchel from a stranger in a downtown saloon.
A naphtha launch carrying Mr. and Mrs. Ryan of Washington Heights and Mrs. Laura Andrade capsized about a mile from Rockaway Beach. Mrs. Andrade drowned. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan were rescued two hours later by Thomas Toldrowski after clinging to the wreck. The Ryans and the Andrade family resided in Rockaway's tent settlement this summer and often cruised in the Lee in late afternoon. Police were alerted and searched the water for the missing body.
In Buffalo on Sunday Klaw and Erlanger with the Shuberts forcibly occupied the Lyric Theatre. John Laughlin was ejected after revolvers were reportedly seen and the doors barricaded. Laughlin says contracts grant eight years of possession while the others claim contracts are unfufilled. police and detectives are involved as Laughlin vows court action.
New Haven aug 25 Sachem Hall the new 100000 dormitory and Chapter House of the Phi Sigma Kappa Society at Yale was badly damaged by fire early today. The blaze started in the third story and consumed the third story and roof while the first and second floors were damaged. Damages run about 25000. Fire cause believed defective insulation. The dormitory was to open at the start of the college year. Janitor John Wilmore narrowly escaped after being found asleep inside.
William D. Sargent, 43, a manufacturer from Hutton Park Orange N J, was arrested on Jamaica Avenue near Hale Avenue East New York for speeding in a car carrying three men and a woman friend, with Sargent at the wheel.

Vaderland incoming from Antwerp eighty miles east of Nantucket with time not given. Ryndam incoming from Rotterdam fifty miles east of Nantucket at 8 15 P M yesterday due at her pier about 3 30 P M today.

Three men and a woman were stranded for four hours on Long Island Rock off City Island after their launch struck submerged rock while bound for Norwalk. Coast guard captained by Lane rescued them as two others in a small boat later drifted ashore at City Island after a long search. The four rescuers and rescued parties included James W. Davis W. W. Davis and George Davis and wife of Brooklyn plus John Hildebrand and David Cooper. The duo in the small boat were reported missing until they reached City Island in the evening.
Howard Beets aged 16 of 812 Twelfth Avenue drowned while bathing at Coney Island yesterday afternoon. He went with friend Daniel Stack of 2061 Eighth Avenue Manhattan who left to get food. Beets suddenly disappeared and was not seen again, locally believed to have had a cramp and been carried out by the undertow.
Emil Basse of 138 Van Wyck Street Brooklyn told police that Thomas Cole of Brooklyn drowned in Staten Island Sound. The men set out from Brooklyn Saturday night to fish near Chelsea Richmond, anchored and slept, then Cole disappeared when Basse checked the deck early Sunday.
Isidore Holsapfer aged 18 of Manhattan drowned in Jamaica Bay while bathing near Pleasant Avenue Rockaway Beach. John Setter of Brooklyn retrieved him but efforts to revive him failed. The event occurred yesterday. details from the surf report follow.

Frank H. Reilly, aged two, of 1758 Third Avenue, was rushed to Harlem Hospital yesterday afternoon by Dr. Ross after drinking crème de menthe from a bottle. The child climbed from a high chair to a sideboard and collapsed. a stomach pump at the hospital removed the danger of poisoning.
Mrs A G Barty dies at Song Branch New Jersey eight weeks after being bitten by a cat. The 4 year old child, a native of Oxford Pennsylvania, succumbed to hydrophobia and rabies.
Agnes Maguire 27 a Brooklyn public school teacher vanished near Nolan's Point Lake Hopatcong after a buggy ride with cousin Charles Maguire. Hundreds searched woods and water through night and day. two colored men reported a woman near Sunnyside Hotel at 7 30 am but descriptions differed from Maguire.
Three year old Helen Metzger was struck and killed by a Greenpoint line trolley on Franklin and Freeman Streets in Williamsburg as her parents walked to church. Motorman Michael Faulkner could not stop and the child was dragged beneath the wheels. The father pursued and beat the motorman before police intervened to restore order.
