Three brothers Joseph Charles and John Carter of 63 South Washington Square swam in the Harlem River near Two Hundred Thirty-third Street. The current pulled Thomas and Joseph out and they drowned. John rescued Thomas but failed to save Joseph. Thomas died at age eighteen. Joseph was twenty-three. John thirty-two. An ambulance was called but Joseph’s body was not recovered.
Special to The New York Times reports three boys drowned while swimming on a gravel riverbank in Pittsburg Pennsylvania. William J Carroll fourteen Amiel Kologowski twelve and an unidentified thirteen yr old were involved as an older group attempted to rescue them. Carroll and Kologowski bodies were recovered after hours of search while the third boy remained missing.
Passengers aboard the French liner La Bretagne traveling from Havre formed a vegetarian club, dubbed La Société des Legumineux, prompting the chef to count bean varieties and soups. Eight Franciscan nuns voyage to Canada with other exiled order members elsewhere.
Paul McQuinn nine year old son of Michael McQuinn of C. C. Shayne & Co West Forty second Street died after falling into the elevator shaft of the Chelsea apartment house at One Hundred and Fortieth Street and Seventh Avenue He entered the lift with a colored boy James Butts as the car ascended the shaft door left open and the shaft grate forced open the body wedged between wall and car despite efforts by the father janitor and physicians the boy died at 7 30 p m
On Sixth Street near the Allegheny Bridge in Pittsburg, a two story brick building housing Peter S. Huckestein’s saloon and offices collapsed into an adjacent excavation where Henry Phipps had begun an office tower. Over 3,000 spectators watched as the structure tilted and fell at about six in the evening, shielding by dust.
The New York Times will erect a large modern steel building on a triangle bounded by Broadway West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, with the George A Fuller Company as contractor. Cyrus L. W. Bidlitz is the architect. occupancy is hoped for in early 1904. Adolph S. Ochs parcels the site to the Times Building Company.
