College Girl Slain as Suitor Ends Own Life on Smith Campus
Miss Helen Ayer Marden of Somerville, popular Smith College senior, was shot on campus by Porter M. Smith, a Dartmouth graduate, who then killed himself. An engagement had been broken in what witnesses call unbalanced mind. she died hours later at Dickinson Hospital. The tragedy occurred in front of the students’ building as about 1,000 were in chapel. Smith, who had been pursuing her, fired multiple shots before committing suicide. Marden, 23, daughter of Frank W. Marden of Boston, was renowned in college for her musical talent and stage presence with the Glee Club and Phi Kappa Psi. she lived in Somerville and White Lodge, and was a leading figure among her peers.
