The vestibuled Chicago flier leaving Detroit at 1 10 PM on the Pere Marquette Western Division was ditched at Sunfield 112 miles out when rails spread at 50 mph. The engine plunged into a bank and cars were torn from trucks but no telescoping occurred. Engineer Fuller was seriously scalded by escaping steam and Fireman Gossett was likely fatally injured, pinned beneath wreckage. A relief train later carried injured and seventy passengers to Grand Rapids five hours late.
