A noon attack on Mayor John Purroy Mitchel on Park Row left Corporation Counsel Frank L. Polk wounded in the chin. The would be assassin Michael Mahoney, previously identified as David Rose and David Ross, was overpowered by Police Commissioner Arthur Woods and others as Mahoney confessed. Polk’s jaw was shattered, two teeth knocked out, and surgeons removed the bullet. Polk’s father Dr. William M. Polk visited the hospital, and the city sent condolences and questions about motive and affiliation.
