The Patten pool reportedly cleared between four and five million dollars on the May wheat contract, with James A. Patten pocketing about two thirds. Bakers face high flour prices, and officials probe the Patten corner as Patten guards his position amid threats and market manipulation claims.
James Kiernan 38 a motorman on the Fourteenth Street line died after his car ran west on Fourteenth Street from the East River terminal and halted opposite 319 East Fourteenth Street. Tohlman then slashed his own neck and chest with a sharpened button hook before collapsing from loss of blood. He is reported near death. Dr. Lamb recovered consciousness after ten minutes and continued about the hospital.
