The State Senate rejected Frank M. Baker’s nomination as Railroad Commissioner, with Senator Platt accusing three Republican dissenters Elsberg Brackett and Brown of acting from personal spite. Western division Post Office Inspectors interrogated more than a dozen clerks amid a probe into a promotion syndicate that allegedly charged fees of 25 to 50 dollars to place clerks on a 1616 name promotion list. Authorities note six other inspectors are active. postmaster silent on official details. Nearly a thousand clerks are said to have paid agents connected to the Washington list.
