Trenton April 14 The Board of Inspectors probing Vinecballe prison irregularities seeks to confirm a forger crafted bill to cut prison terms by one third aimed at releasing Paterson murderers Death McAllister and Campbell after two thirds served. George Osborne linked to the plan, Kerr released last February, and a vetoed bill may see repeal when the Legislature convenes.
A street duel outside Café Gambrinos at 170 Thompson Street killed John Alphano of 172 Thompson Street. Seven shots were fired as both men exchanged gunfire before one collapsed on the sidewalk and the other fled into the cafe. Police and Dr. Nicholson arrived. Alphano died from a heart shot. No identification of the second shooter was disclosed.
Pittsburgh April 14 John Dalzell appears to have been defeated by M abe Kelly for renomination in the Thirteenth Congressional District.
United States issues a strong ultimatum to Mexico and rebel and government forces over the murder and mistreatment of American citizens in the Mexican conflict. Huntington Wilson, acting secretary of state, dispatches to the Mexican ambassador and Chihuahua consul demanding humane treatment of prisoners and recognition of American consuls.

A half finished Church of Our Lady of Victory in Harrington Park New Jersey collapsed its floor during a cornerstone ceremony trapping about 300 worshippers under tons of lumber. Two women died and about fifty were seriously injured as rescuers freed victims from the wreckage.

In Cleveland April 14 the Rev Dr W W Bustard pastor of John D Rockefeller’s Euclid Avenue Baptist Church presented ten don’ts for husbands as a cure for divorce. He urged love after marriage not merely courtship and warned against running a 40 horsepower salary on a 4 horsepower budget. He added a note that wives will receive further admonitions with ten don’ts for wives.
A Somerset Y A Society survey of 1 200 Cornell University students shows about 65 percent support dry dinners smok ers and other student events. Respondents also believe reunions should not display excessive drinking and that student publications should drop liquor advertisements.
Halifax wires say Titanic struck an iceberg off Newfoundland. Allan line Virginian speeds toward the scene with 200 passengers, ready to transfer Titanic travelers if needed. Virginian may not tow. Montreal reports Virginian confirms collision and rescue request. Virginian could carry 900 more aboard if required.
The White Star liner Titanic, largest ship in the world, departs Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York carrying a notable list of passengers including Major Archibald Butt President Taft's military aide and prominent names such as Mr and Mrs John Jacob Astor Mr and Mrs Isidor Straus Alfred G Vanderbilt J B Widener Robert W Daniels Mrs J Stuart White Countess Rothes and J Bruce Ismay among others The ship earlier received wireless calls for help from other vessels including the Virginian and Cincinnati.
