A dynamo explosion at Star Quilting Company on 68 Grand Street sparked flames and heavy smoke, causing panic on the fourth floor and prompting rescues by police and workers. The blaze remained confined to the fourth floor with no injuries reported.
In a Brooklyn or Manhattan neighborhood game near Ninety-ninth Street a wild pitch into the Hudson led to an 8 year old catcher sinking in icy water. Fifteen year old Nicholas Cabbock swam to the child and rescued him until naval reserve volunteers arrived to pull both to shore. An ambulance team aided, and after twenty minutes the younger boy regained a smile followed by hospital care.
Elmer E. Gallbreath and Charles H. Davis, former leaders of the Second National Bank, are indicted by a Federal Grand Jury. The 28 counts allege misapplication of funds, false entries, and abstractions tied to Ford & Johnson Chair Company. Davis and Gallbreath face charges linked to overdrawn amounts totaling 81 716.95 and bank board connections.
