British and French units fight steeply south of the Somme as German divisions press toward Hamel and Amiens. Reports describe six German divisions on a 9000 yard front, with New Zealanders and Allied troops taking prisoners and counterattacking near Aveluy Wood and the Ancre trench line.
An official dispatch from France says Sergeant Putnam has four confirmed victories with a fifth pending certification. Amsterdam reports via Les Nouvelles of Maastricht that a long-range German gun, similar to those that bombarded Paris, passed through Belgium from Esser. The gun barrel measures 20 to 25 meters (65 to 80 feet) and the calibre ranges from 20 to 25 centimeters.
British headquarters report fourteen German divisions including the 1st Prussian Guard attack across a wide front between the Somme and Montdidier. Despite heavy bombardment and large numbers, Allied lines held with a 7000 yard salient near Corbil and Hamel being straightened after pressure from German fire.
Field Marshal von Hindenburg told the Essen Chamber of Commerce via Amsterdam dispatch that the Entente has convinced Germany victory is now certain and that temporary sacrifices will secure Germany's political and economic future. The message urged support for the Third Liberty Loan bond.
Paris reports French forces under Pétain, taking advantage of a lull, counterattacked north of Montdidier and regained ground around Cantigny. German assault with fifteen divisions aimed at the Amiens Paris railway but failed to reach it, suffering heavy losses.
General Foch told AP and other war correspondents that all is going well in France as small Allied advances on the 27th to 30th indicate the German tidal wave has been broken. He said the enemy now lies against an embankment and is stopped, while promising to do better and gain the upper hand.
Berlin reports local infantry fighting on both sides of the Somme as German long range guns bombard Paris. Prisoner counts rise and claims of gun destruction circulate. analysts doubt the gun’s collapse while noting possible railway mounting and tunnel concealment. Allied counterattacks near the Avre and Verdun intensify artillery activity.
German forces pressed heavy assaults from the Somme northward toward Bucquoy and east of Villers Bretonneux but gained virtually no ground and suffered heavy losses. British counterattacks near Hebuterne and Dernancourt captured prisoners and machine guns as German efforts faded south of the Somme.
