The British force under Col Broadwood retreated near Bloemfontein after dawn shelling and an ambush near Thaba N’chu. A convoy fell into a Boer trap with captures and few casualties. Other items note Portugal aiding passage to Rhodesia and various distant incidents.
San Francisco reports from Honolulu dated March 21 say the steamer Cleveland bound for San Francisco with a $100,000 Kahului sugar cargo is adrift with a broken shaft. Three crew members left in a small boat for Maui. they were last seen by the Eric about forty miles from Aiaui. The Cleveland was about 320 miles north northwest of Maui when they departed. A search steamer has been sent. The vessel has a history as a Civil War blockade runner and later as a Philippines transport.
Franklin Circuit Court opens its April term in Frankfort with Judge Cantrill presiding as the Goebel assassination probe begins. Grand Jurors named later. Commonwealth's Attorney Franklin to lead the case with subpoenas for key witnesses. Suspects include Caleb Powers W J Hazelip Henry Youtsey J G Sutton Harland Whitaker Silas Jones and John Davis. Warrants out for Charles Finley Capt John H Powers and Tallow Dick Coombs. Indictments unlikely this week as venue changes and broad prosecutions loom with public anger high.
Special to The New York Times reports in Boston that the Hotel Wollaston on Beacon Street must be torn down after cracks widened rapidly. Built for 200000 about two years ago, it sits over the Brookline boundary idle for a year with walls splitting and a dangerous sidewalk in front as officials fence the site.
Mrs. Augusta Bliss of New York widow of the donor to the church has offered a $50,000 endowment for St. John's Episco pal Church in Northampton. The fund will be permanent with interest used to keep the building in perfect repair.

Gen Colville forces then shelled the Boers as news notes warn of Boer tactics and renewed pressure on Lord Roberts.
Cape Town March 31 The departure of British transports with Boer prisoners for St Helena is delayed due to rising sickness. Three die today and twelve die this week. Arrangements are made to avoid overcrowding. Prisoners do not complain of treatment or food. Many of Cronje's men are worn out from hardships and fighting disease, and confinement on shipboard is irksome.
In Pretoria on March 30 President Kruer announced the late Commandant Gen Joubert wished Louis Botha to succeed him as Commandant General. The statement marks a direct expression of the succession desire.

CAPE TOWN April 1 Army orders abolish the title Free State Railways and supersede it with the title International Military Railways. The change is issued today and reflects a formal organizational rebranding by military authorities.
Dr. Leyds informs the Berlin press that 400,000 marks have been collected in Germany for the Boers, signaling strong support from German donors for the South African War relief effort.

Plainfield New Jersey April 1 Visitors crowded the Middlesex County Poorhouse near New Market to see Noah Raby who claims to be 128 years old. The famed pauper, nearly blind, offered an informal greeting to guests who have visited him for years, and received several presents during the visit.
The University of Chicago will grant a novel associate in arts or sciences degree at the spring convocation to fifteen students who have completed freshman and sophomore work. The change, supported by President Harper, signals a broader shift in higher education following a national meeting where a university association was formed.

Police reserves from High Bridge, King's Bridge and Morrisania Stations are on duty amid a Bronx rumor of a labor wage demand at the Jerome Park Reservoir. About 4,000 workers, employed by John B. McDonald, may walk off if $2 a day is not offered. current pay is $1.25.
Paterson New Jersey April 1 machinists in this city ended a weeks long strike in obedience to a telegram from national union officers. The workers will seek their old positions tomorrow and return to work pending arbitration between manufacturers and the union.
London reports the death of Dr St George Mivart, former zoology lecturer at St Marys Hospital Medical School and biology professor at the University of Leuven. A leading English Roman Catholic scientist, he debated Cardinal Vaughan over biblical inspiration, declaring the Bible inspired like Shakespeare. Born 1827 in London, he wrote Genesis of Species and Man and Apes among others.
Albert Taussig of 1883 First Avenue fought two burglars last night. He fired three shots after wresting a revolver from his desk. Police traced blood drops to 300 East Ninety eighth Street but did not locate the burglars.
In Beattie Kansas the town plans a mayor and council contest between the all woman ticket led by Mrs Totten and a business group ticket "For Progress and Prosperity." Churches and temperance groups support the women who earlier cleaned up streets and pledged reform. A union temperance meeting is held ahead of the vote tomorrow.
The Black Diamond Express departs New York at noon on the Lehigh Valley Railroad bound for Buffalo. The train features an a la carte dining car service as well as luxurious parlor and day coaches. Adv.

The report sparked talk of Chief Devery’s possible resignation, denied by Police Commissioners and supported cautiously by Dr. Parkhurst. The State Excise Department pursued injunctions against Corey and other licenses to curb disorderly venues.
District Attorney Gardiner and attorney Samuel Untermyer withdrew a telegram intended for Governor Roosevelt. The message sought to refer charges from the March Grand Jury to Commissioner Wilcox amid impeachment hearings. Untermyer said he countermanded the telegram after Wilcox’s handling of developments.
