Cornell was killed and another William Cushman wounded as rebels retreated after a volley. A Virginian, Mortimer, was shot nearby by rebels mistaken for a Union man. conflicting dispatches place the attack near Cloud's Mill four miles from Fairfax Court House.

From Harrisburg the Saturday dispatch notes two regiments to move from Lancaster toward Chambersburg with five cavalry units totaling about a thousand men.
