An extensive flyer praises Hoofland's German Bitters as a universal tonic for debility, dyspepsia, liver and kidney troubles, and various ailments. It claims dramatic cures and offers a $1,000 prize for proof of a better tonic, naming numerous testimonials and diverse readers across the country.
Major General Banks received the compliment from the Louisiana delegation in New Orleans. Governor Hab of Louisiana spoke briefly, praising the President's Message and calling treason a crime. Banks affirmed freedom and equal rights for all, and outlined his stance as a private citizen and public official. The report notes various other city items and government actions from the period.
In Virginia the legislature on December 6 1805 repealed the act allowing the transfer of Berkeley and Jefferson counties to West Virginia. The body organized yesterday with Harrison Layer elected Speaker and K. Thomas serving as Clerk.
Europe reports four days later news with the Shenandoah sailing for New York amid continued European concerns. England remains wary of Fenian activities as Pigeon-House Fort in Dublin is fortified. A preliminary reform bill looms as protests against Spain’s conduct intensify.
The City of New-York arrived after a Liverpool departure on the 22d with Queenstown on the mid of November. Correspondent reports from Havana via St Thomas on November 9 1845 that rebel forces near Cay Hustien suffered losses and the revolt nears its end. Government triumphs at Port Prince and Jacroel are noted with foreign officials present. Several rebels reportedly executed others seized by British consuls and courts. The Spanish Royal Mail steamer Santo Domingo endured heavy weather and port Souza received moved cargo while Pizarro arrived with dispatched goods.
A Tennessee House vote of 30 to 7 tabled a bill allowing Negroes to testify in courts. Opponents in East Tennessee carried the defeat, while leading Conservatives supported the measure. News from Nashville dated December 5, 1865. Heavy rains and flooding noted with rail and canal activity. Adirondack Railroad expansion reported near Saratoga and new mineral water discovery by Dr. Harkins near High Rock Sprite. Celebration at Leslie as a train arrived. crowds and gun salutes reported.
On December 5 1368 the Ocean Oil Company’s intendent was robbed of 64200 in money and 10000 in checks. Two men fled. one struck his watch and escaped, the other rifled his person. No suspects yet, and no clear motive or guilty party identified. Arrival notices mention the Hibernia and Litera with no ship sightings of Litera.
