Harkin Recounts Meeting Sir Walter Scott Reminiscences

River Navigation Plan Outlined At Belle Plaine Meeting

Delegates from Shakopee Belle Plaine Henderson Le Sueur St Peter and other valley towns met last Friday to petition Congress to improve the Minnesota river and make it navigable A six member committee led by Senators Colley Poehler Weiss Johnson Works and Belle Plaine Mayor Irwin plus Fred Fritsche of Lafayette will organize at Le Sueur today The project aims to prevent floods that have damaged crops and property from New Ulm to Shakopee.

Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad Shows Strong Year

The annual statement filed with the railroad commission reports a net income of nearly half a million. Passenger revenue in Minnesota totals 612,950.34 and freight revenue 1,316,935.28, with other income from track and equipment rentals pushing Minnesota gross to 2,168,215.01. Systemwide gross is 34,152,953.97. Operating expenses plus interest and taxes yield a net income of 437,706.26, with a 5 percent preferred dividend and a year end surplus of 237,706.26. Road capital stock stands at 15,046,600 and funded debt at 28,515,683.12, total investment 43,561,283.12 for 770.06 miles.

Catholics Gather at Hastings for State Conventions

New Ulm led a twenty member delegation to Hastings for the eleventh annual federation of German Catholic societies in Minnesota and the 29th annual German Catholic Benevolent association meeting. St. Paul and Minneapolis also sent reps as about 5,000 spectators viewed the opening day parade. The New Ulm group included Rev Sandmeyer and many local figures.

GIESKE ROBBED ON TRAIN IN ST PAUL RAID

J B Gieske mining promoter arrived in St Paul from Livingston Montana and reported robbery of 590 dollars in greenbacks between Glendive and Beach. His pocketbook was found empty, two suspects were searched but money not recovered. Gieske says he is president of the Consolidated Mining and Development company of Soldier Idaho.
