Federal rules tighten migratory bird protections across the United States and Canada with open seasons set from September to November. Minnesota mirrors federal limits, bans on hunting in open water, and requires licenses. The act empowers federal wardens and the sun time schedule governs daily shooting hours.
Returns of the classification of those who turned twenty one since June 5 1017 and registered in June show 1%4 registered. about 80 claimed no exemption. Of those exempt, 105 placed in Class 1 and 5 in Deferred Classes after District Board review at Mankato. Sixty six were deferred or disqualified, four had joined the colors, one alien enemy. Many volunteers and disabled listed with cities New Ulm Springfield Sleepy Eye Cobden and more. Names of those deferred or disqualified follow.
Last Friday morning Ole Reierson discovered a check at the Citizens' State Bank of Tyler. The check, drawn by postmistress Jessie Hogue, had been paid by the bank and apparently blew out of the wrecked post office. It had traveled about sixty miles and remained largely intact aside from a three inch center tear. The writing in pencil stayed clear and undisturbed by water.
The United States Food Administration says sugar will advance about one cent per pound. No date set yet for the rise. jobbers may markup 35 cents per hundred pounds, retailers one cent per pound, with rules to prevent profiteering. Citizens urged to cut sugar use to aid France and the army, suggesting six level teaspoons daily.
An emergency food administration order announced after Wilson conferences directs prohibition of beer production in the United States after December 1, 1918. The move targets fuel, labor, and transport needs, with Minnesota breweries and firms like Hamm, Schmidt, and Yoerg facing shutdowns and job losses, while saloons may also close. Capt. Hofmeister's son Hayden may become band leader as he nears Camp Dix.
The New Ulm City Council discussed funding a La France auto truck fire apparatus costing 7,700 funded by the Fire Department Association loaned for 15 years at 4 percent. Delivery expected in over six months. Also debated were heating court house, side tracks for Eagle Roller Mill, district improvements, and license actions.
State Board of Control and game and fish department granted rights to seize rough fish from thirteen Minnesota counties on applications with no competition. Larger lake grants to follow. Contracts require 20 percent gross receipts to the state and provision of rough fish to state institutions. Congress authorizes federal oversight to track wheat and threshing returns to report available wheat for food and wartime allies.
The document outlines registration procedures under the manpower act for felons inmates in penitentiaries and absentees in jails and reformatories. Wardens will keep registration cards and forward copies to adjutants general, who file separately. Inmates of insane asylums and similar institutions are absentees and their cards go to local boards.
