The Chicago board of trade sees historic activity as wheat prices surge on belief of a global shortfall. Traders report record volumes, persistent gains, and continued speculative excitement though crop reports vary. Prices push above a dollar for several months and a deluge of profit taking follows.
Last Sunday's game between New Ulm and Sleepy Eye saw Sleepy Eye lead 2 1 after three, then surge to 4 2 in the sixth. New Ulm tied it with two runs in the seventh, but Sleepy Eye broke through in the ninth with two runs, winning 6 4. Scoring details include Spaeth and Mueller driving in runs for Sleepy Eye and Berg, Fisher, Hartman contributing for New Ulm. Earned runs credited to New Ulm 4 and Sleepy Eye 0.
Joseph Reinhart a longtime Nicollet county resident and former postmaster at St George died at St Alexander’s hospital after a long consumption illness. Born 1854 in Milwaukee he built wealth as a store tavern owner in St George and served the community through church and township duties. Funeral held from St George Catholic church with many mourners. Survived by eleven children and several extended relatives.
Prominent Milford farmer Jacob Haubrich narrowly escaped death when his loaded wagon stalled on Center Street as a northbound freight approached. The engine struck the wagon, breaking it and scattering wheat along the tracks. Haubrich was thrown but saved by holding the reins and escaping serious injury. The incident prompts calls for a watchman on Center Street tracks, mirroring the safety at 3rd North Street.
Allie De Vlaeminck, foreman at Oscar Bierbauer's brickyard in North Mankato, wired 30 dollars after a fictitious Ellis Island telegram claimed his brother Jule was detained on the Campania and needed funds. Jule denies sending any message or needing money, and the brothers seek a refund from the telegraph company.
Delegates from various Woman's clubs will meet in our city Friday afternoon and stay through Saturday noon. Friday includes a four o’clock reception at Mrs. Mullen’s home and a six o’clock banquet at Turner Hall with Mrs. Fred Meier as toastmistress. Open meeting at 8:30 will feature welcomes, toasts, musical numbers, and talks on education and community influence. Saturday morning continues with invocations, duets, and papers, then officer elections and business. Secretary of State Schmahl blocked a lumber dealers association incorporation for restraint of trade. Also noted: pineapples at Behnke’s, 20 cents each or 2 for 35 cents.
