Gold Found on Bier Farm Along Cottonwood River
Prospectors report a sand ledge on the Bier farm near the Cottonwood River, with samples showing traces of gold. Hubert Berg and Fred Kretsch purchase the 237 acre farm for 9100 dollars and plan mining with Bernhard’s proposed equipment. Assays by John Neumann and Philip Bernhard’s Colorado lab indicate gold, bolstered by state university professor Appleby findings, making the venture seem promising.

Stone company kept busy with granite macadam work
Ramsey county commissioners asked the New Ulm Stone company to supply 20,000 cubic yards of crushed granite for street macadamizing. A contract will be signed soon, with about 600 carloads total and enough to run the plant for over a hundred days. Additional orders include 120 carloads for Grand and Prosperity avenues in Saint Paul. Sleepy Eye ordered 50 cars for its main street. The granite is praised as ideal for road work. In Maine Arbor Day proclamation the forests are called the state’s heritage. Sleepy Eye’s Rev Fritze was invited to deliver a baccalaureate sermon in Charles City on June 2. Daniel Webster flour uses thoroughly washed kernels, yielding fine bread color. 1811 Thomas French, former Sleepy Eye barber, was crushed by two railroad cars and had his leg amputated.
