Governor Attends Armory Dedication in Minnesota City

Governor L A A Burnquist visited the city for the Armory dedication of the local guard, greeted by a 21 gun salute and large crowds. The event included inspections, addresses by Mayor Fritsche and Adjutant General Wood, and a band concert followed by a military ball.

White Way to Depots Sign Up Drives Local Fundraising

About 1800 dollars has been subscribed by property owners for the white way to the two railroad stations along Second North and First South Streets. The committee expects several hundred more soon and a council levy of about 500 dollars may be needed, with parks along the routes. Railroads may contribute, and the idea includes extending the white way onto depot grounds. Otto Oswald plans a waiting room at New Ulm Steam Laundry for rapid cleaning. A pilot proposal offered to an unsuspecting newspaperman led to a suit cleaned, pressed and packed in 90 minutes with a receipted bill arriving by morning mail.

New Ulm Girl Takes Part in Shakespeare Centenary Pageant

Esther Reim, a New Ulm High School graduate and National German American Teachers' Seminary student, acted in the Merchant of Venice casket scene during Milwaukee’s tercentenary celebration of Shakespeare’s death. The pageant featured 800 performers and highlighted scenes from nine plays with vivid pantomime and color.

New Ulm Heating Co Wins City Franchise

At an adjourned meeting last Thursday the city council granted New Ulm Heating Company a franchise to operate on streets and alleys and install a heating system with the electric light and water works plant. The deal includes turning over the entire plant to the city at cost plus 6 percent interest. A sidewalks and crosswalks contract was awarded to Aug Puhlmann. The council also arranged coal bids, repair funding for Bentzin bridge, and use of a new street roller for county roads with Carl Stone likely to operate it.

Fatal accidental rifle discharge claims West Newton youth

An 18 year old, Benjamin Walser, was killed when a rifle discharged while he stood with it in his hands on his family farm near West Newton. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM after he went to the field to shoot gophers. No witness details, funeral services held at St George Catholic Church, burial at the church cemetery. An earlier note adds dog control notices and license reminders for New Ulm.

Swan Lake Drainage Protest in Brighton Meeting

A Swan Lake drainage plan to reclaim 16 500 acres by digging an outlet to the Minnesota River faces opposition from nearby landowners and sportsmen. Blue Earth Boy On Way To Wild West

Herbert Quartz, a fifteen year old from Blue Earth, was picked up by Policeman Herzog in a barn near the vinegar works after neighbors saw him enter. He had run away last Wednesday to see the world he saw in moving pictures, riding freight trains to Lake Crystal St James and New Ulm before agreeing to return home with Deputy Sheriff Stevener. He now plans to resume school, concluding the West is not as grand as pictured. Armory dedication attendees included Major and Mrs. O. J. Quane of St. Peter and Lieut. Col. Mead of Mankato.

Jury Deadlock In Fish Seining Case At Local Court

Two men Fred Christen sen and Fred Kappelmann faced trial on fish and game law charges after allegedly using a seine near Bentzin mill dam. Warden Mather and Constable Baltrusch testified. defendants claimed minnows only. Jury of 4 for conviction, 7 for acquittal deadlocked. case continued after two days of testimony.

Grand Jury Urges Jail and Court House Repairs

The Brown County May term of the district court opened with Sheriff Julius presiding. Grand jury foreman Michael Lehrer and clerk J. M. Meyer led a panel that found no criminal cases likely and noted the jail and courthouse need interior repainting and plaster repairs. They reported county offices tidy and officials diligent after touring county buildings.
