State Supreme Court Cuts Freight Rates Across Minnesota
Minnesota shippers stand to save about a quarter of a million dollars yearly on freight charges after a Supreme Court ruling. The decision says that if a railroad ships by interstate routes but moves goods within state lines, interstate rates cannot exceed intrastate rates. Coal from Duluth routed through Wisconsin to Southern Minnesota highlights the change, with Duluth to Twin Cities at about $2.00 per ton and current Duluth to New Ulm rates at $1.85 for soft coal and $2.05 for hard coal.
