Ill Health Forces Colonel 10 Retire From Minnesota Guard

Colonel John Buschers will retire from the Minnesota National Guard on June 30 after nearly thirty years of service from private to colonel. He transfers to Governor Burnquist's staff at his own request, while a statewide election for his successor will be held at the state capitol today with several majors and lieutenants vying for the post amid spirited factions.

State Supreme Court Cuts Freight Rates Across Minnesota

Minnesota shippers stand to save about a quarter of a million dollars yearly on freight charges after a Supreme Court ruling. The decision says that if a railroad ships by interstate routes but moves goods within state lines, interstate rates cannot exceed intrastate rates. Coal from Duluth routed through Wisconsin to Southern Minnesota highlights the change, with Duluth to Twin Cities at about $2.00 per ton and current Duluth to New Ulm rates at $1.85 for soft coal and $2.05 for hard coal.

Insane Prisoner Escapes From Asylum

Local police sought Patrick J. Gibbons, an insane prisoner who vanished Sunday night from the St. Peter asylum. Gibbons, linked to a 1911 double murder in South St. Paul, is described as short and stout, about 200 pounds, with a mustache and heavy eyebrows. He may have escaped via a tunnel to the sewer and was last seen near the Northwestern bridge over the Minnesota river.

Overalls Fire Destroys Shipment at St Peter Depot

Eighty dozen pairs of New Ulm factory overalls burned with a box car and contents on a sidetrack near Northwestern depot in St Peter. The loss to the railroad runs to several thousand dollars though the factory is not liable as ownership rests with the railroad until delivery. Tramps are suspected as the fire origin due to shelter seeking in rain and a broken seal on one car.

Local merchants fear organized external pressure to block a planned wholesale grocery firm. An outsider boasted of opening a rival in New Ulm, while railroads and financiers reportedly face pressure to oppose leasing warehouses. Wholesalers reportedly limit entry via silent trade pacts as the Commercial Club contemplates action.

City prepares to oil streets with new street roller

City Park Beautified for Summer Visitors and Cemetery Building Progress

German Park buildings have been repainted and repaired in the past week in preparation for summer visitors. Sunday night band concerts will start when weather permits. A new cemetery building is advancing under city contract and should be completed by August 1. St Paul Boosters Skip New Ulm Trade Excursion Route

Local business men protest as St Paul Association of Commerce excludes New Ulm from an annual booster train tour. The M and St L line will stop at most stations from St Paul to the Iowa line, with New Ulm left off despite previous visits. The trip includes the Minnesota State Band and moving pictures to be shown in theatres later.

Negligence Causes Death of Newborn Child at Springfield

Deputy County Coroner Weiser and Sheriff Julius investigated a newborn death at Springfield on request of village authorities. An examination of the remains cleared the suspected parties, refuting sensational rumors. Dr Weiser stated the death resulted from maternal negligence rather than criminal intent.

Annuls Marriage Forever After St Paul Desertion

Nicollet residents attended a district court hearing on the proposed annulment of the 1914 St Paul marriage of John Micke a Nicollet farmer. He died by suicide after the bride exited with his money and vanished. The judge voided the union and barred Hedwig Micke from any claim to John Micke’s property, with the estate passing to seven children.

Five Districts to Vote on School Consolidation

Residents of Brown and Cottonwood counties plan a June 8 special election in Comfrey to consolidate five districts Nos 80 Comfrey 49 72 Brown and Nos 34 63 Cottonwood. The plan has state approval and will use the Comfrey building pending a new high school. Only rural district voters may participate.

Athletic Meet of Turners to Be Held in Minneapolis

Members of the Minnesota Turnverein societies plan their annual athletic meet in Minneapolis on Sunday June 17. St Anthony Turnverein will arrange park reservations. Many New Ulm athletes and passive members are expected to join. An excursion train on the M and St L will offer a low round trip rate.

Memorial Day observance planned with remarks and parade

The G A R committee arranges Memorial Day programs at City cemetery with German speaker Hugo Mosel and readings including Lincoln’s Gettysburg address. Second Regiment band will lead a parade from Center and State streets to the cemetery, with school children invited to participate and Burgs Battery drill units adding to the procession. The Minnesota department seeks state aid to ensure every school is visited before Memorial Day and Governor Burnquist has agreed to issue a proclamation supporting the plan.

Warkne sells prime residence on State and First South

Henry C. Warnke sold his corner residence on State and First South streets to Julius Strohschein of Wood Lake Minnesota for about 10500. The new owner plans to move in by July and the Warnke family will rent elsewhere while they travel to the West this fall and return next spring. The property is considered one of the citys most valuable homes.
