Red Cross Seeks District Fund Drive for 100000000

New Ulm Red Cross Chapter launches a district campaign to raise at least 100000000 for war relief with a target of 10000 from its jurisdiction. Randall of Minneapolis oversees the drive led by F W Johnson with committees across New Ulm Hanska Sigel Linden Lake Hanska Albin and Milford townships. A parade and sale on Decoration Day will follow to sustain war relief needs and shipments averaging 60000 monthly.

Ninth district oversubscribes third liberty loan

A. R. Rogers, chairman for the ninth federal reserve district, announced that every state, county, and most townships have oversubscribed their third liberty loan allotments. Washington ordered 5000 honor flags for the district. Rogers expects the ninth district to lead nationwide, with Minnesota counting 923 towns eligible for honor flags.

Farm furlough rules empower soldiers for harvest aid

After a new wartime law, the War Department outlines farm furlough regulations. Eligible soldiers below sergeant rank may take short leaves during planting and harvest, with overseas duties barred. En masse furloughs for harvest are possible within 24 hours travel, with 1036 forms and local draft board approval.

Nicollet County Court Opens With Light Calendar

The spring term of Nicollet County District Court convened Monday with I M Olsen presiding. Court reporter W T Eckstein present. Expected to last under a week. no grand jury summoned though 10 criminal cases existed. One appeal from Justice Court in the Suess case, first jury trial with 5 jurors empaneled yesterday. Major Albert Pfaender to assist Geo T Olsen in prosecution. A child welfare meeting at the M E church Tuesday supported Sunday Schools.

At the 13th annual meeting in Shell's hall secretary A G Bierbaum reported assets of 92651.50 with 425 stockholders and 2064 phones in service. Gross earnings reached 33206.74, with 27079.55 as earnings after rentals and services.

Heating Firm Reports Six Year City Ownership Plan

New Ulm Heating Co secretary treasurer F W Johnson presents annual report showing progress, $17 000 depreciation fund, and plan for city ownership in six years. Extension increased plant cost to 43 400 with monthly steam sales listed, 59 consumers, capital stock $20 000.

Re elected Directors Detail City Heating Plan

The old board including A. J. Vozel G. A. Ottomeyer F. W. Johnson Ferdinand Crone and Henry N. Semeen was re elected and will meet to perfect the organization. The city council will review the Secu Treas report which may incur minor charges but likely remain as given unless the council charges the entire extra live steam cost. The joint committee report for year ending May 1 1917 was read and filed. No further extensions this year except linking the new city hall to the plant. The consulting engineer says no extensions now profitable and the directors will deny requests unless motor power rises by at least 100 horsepower.

Minnesota Men to Camp Lewis for Draft Call

Minnesota drafts 4700 men to entrain for Camp Lewis Washington within five days starting May 25. Adjutant General Rhinow reports the May draft total around 305000 for the U.S. and notes California Oregon and Nevada are exempt. The plan speeds induction with class 1 surveys and concentrates troops at regular training camps.

Non-Partisan League selects Bryer for senator honors

Herbert Bryer a young farmer near Stewart Minnesota wins non partisan league nomination for senator representing Sibley and Nicollet counties. Seemann of Henderson declined ran prompting Bryer selection at Gaylord last Tuesday.

May Meeting of Commercial Club Sets Sunday Park Concerts

The Commercial Club's May session approved funding plans for the Hofmeister Band and agreed to hold park concerts on Sunday evenings at German Park after weighing weekday suitability. New Ulm Heating Co. chair F W Johnson highlighted city savings from the company's work, noting at least 5 000 08 saved and nearly a million gallons of condensed water repurposed.

Famous First Minnesota Anniversary

A week ago last Monday marked the anniversary of the mustering into federal service of the First Minnesota Infantry. The regiment is renowned for the stand at Gettysburg where many members fell in a brief moment. A. H. Pickle of Sleepy Eye is the surviving member, living in Brown County. Col. Brandabassen of this city served as Quartermaster.
