A long notice outlines new luxury taxes including apparel items and jewelry with rates from one to ten percent. It notes effective dates in 1919 and references a May 1 start for several taxes, plus a described comedy playlet and social dance afterward.
An entertainment by Hofmeister's band with the Current News Club and Ladies' Literary Society drew a full house at the Armory on a rainy evening. The band, famed across the state, delivered excellent performances that met high expectations, earning strong audience applause.
John Haas postmaster of Lamberton was found Not Guilty by a Redwood County District Court jury after a brief deliberation in a May session. Indirect testimony was ruled out by Judge Converse, with only one supporting witness heard. Another loyalty case against Haas was continued to the October term. Carl Struckmann was fined 50 dollars for discouraging Liberty Loan subscriptions, penalty suspended.
Ben Alwin of New Ulm and a Hamline University junior starred in a state relay team that placed third at Des Moines. He regained the lead after the final baton change and also won a four mile marathon in St Paul among thirty two runners. He is expected to be a key factor for Carleton and Macalaster in upcoming meets for the Red and Gray.
The report notes the U S grain corporation headed by Julius H Barnes halted buying white flour, spurring market turmoil as corn and other grains dropped. It cites high cash wheat prices and mills reselling stocks at cost plus expenses, with claims of farmer responsibility and potential removal of export restrictions on Canadian wheat.
Roy Bouers of Huron South Dakota failed to appear at the May 5 hearing in Justice N Henningsen's court on charges of stealing Dr G B Weisers Oldsmobile Roadster Dec 5. Bouers had been at liberty since April 29 with $1500 bail set the prior day. Weisers car remains in Huron in sheriff custody and will be brought to New Ulm in a few days.
Eugene A. Pfefferle retires after thirty-one years as owner of a New Ulm drug store. Rudi Schmucker and Otto Burk take over, spurred by ill health. Pfefferle, a longtime local business leader, is praised for his window artistry and Edison sales drive. He was born near Dodge County and moved to New Ulm as a child, later marrying Lucy Wescheke. Postmaster Pfaender reports a consignment of priority stamps arriving for toilet articles and patent medicines.
A Ren ville County movement plans a memorial for returning soldiers by building an auditorium at Fort Ridgely and improving the site to host yearly encampments. Frank Hopkins leads the effort with Sen. Herman Schmechel among supporters. a Fairfax meeting is set for May 12 with county representation to discuss funding and scope.
