Big Jump Made in Taxes This Year

State faces a record levy of 3.5 mills for 1919 to meet appropriations totaling 81,774,949. The 1919 tax burden rises 250 percent from last year, with possible borrowing from banks to cover excess. Revenue slips from iron mine royalties and inheritance taxes while railroad gross earnings rise by 2,000,000. Local taxes will follow state increases. many details hidden by big city papers.

WOMENS CLUBS OPEN DISTRICT MEETING WITH SPEAKERS

The Second District Federation of Women's clubs begins its annual three day meeting Tuesday May 20 at Turner Hall. Key organizers are Mrs. C H Asch of Springfield Mrs R A Poland of Springfield and Mrs C W Miller of New Ulm who plan lectures on modern life and education alongside musical numbers. The opening delegates meeting is at 7 30 PM with Mrs Asch presiding and Mrs Miller presenting the program. May 21 features three business sessions and further activities.

Minne sota State Federation of Labor Convention Opens in New Ulm

The thirty seventh annual state federation of labor meets in New Ulm starting July 21 at 10 a m. It will decide if the federation should enter politics to secure labor legislation. Secretary George W. Lawson urges unions to send their best representatives as the legislative report and key labor issues await consideration.

Food shipments to Germany Offered under War Trade Board rule

The Balkan American Express & Navigation Company offers food shipments to Germany under Regulation 707 dated April 23 1919. A 4600 ton steamship Thala sails about May 26 from New York to Hamburg or Bremen. Each case up to 50 pounds costs 10 dollars including insurance and transshipment. 10 cents per extra pound.

Baseball Meeting At Club Rooms Tonight

All business men and baseball followers are urged to attend a meeting at the Commercial Club rooms this evening at 7 36 to organize a Boas ball Association and set plans for the coming season. Congress will meet on May 19 in an extra session, but it is unclear when work will begin.

Coal shortage feared for next winter and early buying urged

Local coal dealers warned at the council meeting that a winter shortage may occur if production does not rise during summer. Experts noted output in 1918 rose for war needs before a drop as demand fell. Buy now and store properly to ensure supply. delays risk shortages, especially of anthracite, next winter.

New Ulm Council Awards Coal Contracts and Bridge Plan

At the May 6 meeting the New Ulm City Council split a 4,000 ton coal contract between Nagel and Bingham Bros with half each. Bids included Nagel Leary for screenings at $6.20 per ton and lump coal $5.90. Bingham Bros offered $5.25 for screenings and $5.90 for lump coal. The council also discussed bridge and approaches over the Cottonwood river to ease spring traffic, planning a 28-foot roadway and 30-foot reinforced concrete approach, 1,400 feet long, estimated at $38,000. They tasked the street committee to present to county commissioners on May 15. A proposal by John Woebke to lease part of North German Park for a baseball grandstand received mixed support and was referred to the park committee. Postmaster Fred Pfaender asked about extending rail delivery on Broadway and State streets and street signs, with the matter referred to the street committee.

Fairy Land Banquet Honors Class Of Nineteen Teen

Junior class at the local high school transformed the gym for a Fairy Land themed banquet honoring the Class of 1919. Lavender and white decorations, color lighting, mural windows, and a wide platforms set the dreamy scene. The Hofmeister Orchestra provided music as students, staff, and the school board toasted and danced into the night, ending near eleven thirty.

Commissioners To Decide On Mass Meeting Plan

Brown County Board of County Commissioners will discuss a State Highway Commission inquiry about whether to hold a mass meeting to explain the Bab rock Road Law. A similar meeting is set for St Peter on May 24 with a Commission representative, who has no May 23 obligations and could attend New Ulm if desired.

Steam Heating Co. stockholders hear six percent dividend plan

Secretary F W Johnson reports total earnings of 5866 50 for the year ending May 1 1919 with 143 65 interest on time deposits and 1300 from new patrons. Five percent sinking fund and six percent dividend on outstanding stock are slated, plus expenses and stock retirement. Total on hand for stock retiring 5404 94. Board reelected and plan to retire stock via directors. Monthly steam receipts listed with several months under 1000. City Hall note included.

A Luncheon in the Suburbs Play by Junior Red Cross

The W. K. C. Junior Red Cross workers present a short play titled A Luncheon in the Suburbs at the High School auditorium Saturday evening. Admission is fifteen cents. The Juniors have not appeared since the war began and hope for a large crowd to attend.
