J G Robertson of St Paul secured the contract for a new deep well and its pump equipment after a lengthy adjourned council meeting. Eight bidders submitted multiple proposals, with prices tied to water flow. the well will be 250 to 300 feet, mid way between the plant and well four, ready to begin immediately.
A small fire at the fair grounds yesterday afternoon, likely from heated paint tags, burned a ticket stand before workers tore it down to limit losses. Captain Joseph Hofmeister becomes district VP of the Minnesota Music Features Association as its twenty first annual convention is set for St. Paul on June 28 22 and 24. A quip about keeping a man in hot water follows.
Twenty business men in St Peter formed a Store Bureau to compete with mail order houses. They secured mercantile expert C H Ford to improve pricing, sales, advertising, and methods, aiming to offer better service and cheaper merchandise for residents and nearby areas.
A Sunday night hail storm, reaching Milford and surrounding farms, damaged a half mile by a mile stretch. Edwin Gluth's sixteen acre rye field was destroyed, oats damaged, wheat saved, and a heavy estimated loss of about 600 dollars noted. The storm also struck Hans Larson and Gluth’s neighbor farms, with no window damage reported. Earlier and elsewhere, New Ulm saw wind and lightning, while Hanska and Courtland had heavy rain aiding flax, and H A Martin near Madeira lost barn and silo to lightning fire at four o'clock Monday morning.
The second Park Concert on June 11, 1922, kicked off the summer band series at German park. Captain Hofmeister is expected to direct, with a program including Curro Cuchares, The Golden Sceptre, Spring's Awakening, and several fox trots and waltzes. The Hofmeister band attracts local lovers of band music on Sunday nights.
The 1922 New Ulm Chautauqua opens June 16 with a six day program of music lectures plays and entertainments. The White-Meyers circuit brings high quality acts led by soprano Madame Dora DePhillipps and comedian Ralph Dunbar with Maine Bryan as a headline speaker noted for broad appeal.
Walter Hopp, 19, of Morgan, drowned in the Minnesota River near Eden Township while picnicking with Morgan High School mates. Harold Zaske attempted a rescue but was pulled under. Weldon Schoenheider helped extract Zaske, who revived. Hopp’s death likely from cramps. coroners and county officials visited the scene. Funeral held in Morgan with Morgan band directing music.
A Minnesota Lakes preservation meeting is set for Thursday evening at the Commercial Club Rooms. Organized by the Minnesota Lake Preservation League, the group includes hunters wary of moves reducing breeding areas for wildlife. The meeting will discuss hiring a survey of the Swan Lake Drainage Basin under Roy Allison and state action.
The John Watson Post of Springfield Michigan reports preparations for the American Legion district convention to be held July 28 and 29. New Ulm and nearby posts eye competitive events with a large band tournament, monster parade, and multiple entertainments including two ball games with New Ulm as a participant. Springfield hopes several bands, a class A Hofmeister’s, and encamped Company A from Redwood Falls will join, promising a busy event that could be the district’s biggest Legion gathering.
Mrs Emmy Steinhauser will head the library during the summer with Thursday hours two to five. A year of new books invites public use as the town reads, with titles from Alice Hegan Rice and H G Wells among others listed. Local hosts for a church meeting welcome attendees and note community attendance. arrivals from Minneapolis and local families are mentioned in the social notices.
A Farm Bureau gathering was held at Port Ridgely with the Towne ships Units in southeastern Renville County contributing to the event. The Citizens Band of Fairfax provided music and Harry N. Owen, editor of Farm Stock and Home, delivered a well received address. During the hot summer months commerce activity was noted.
The Civilian Rifle Club of New Ulm fired on the National Guard range for the first time since its organization, with 10 members of Company A shooting at 600 yards before weather halted further rounds. Wind gusts reached 12 to 15 mph and light affected targets. Colonel Brady reports plans to store Army trucks in Lake City to reduce outside shipments. Indeterminate service terms sent Saxon to prison authorities. A Saxon to St Cloud for four months reformatory.
The Sioux Historic Trail Association outlines a June 20 tour starting in St Paul and ending in Granite Falls with New Ulm as an overnight stop. Promoters include C H Hopkins of Fairfield and A J Ochs handling local arrangements. Plans featured addresses on Traverse des Sioux history and the execution of 88 Indians, with stops at Mankato and Fort Ridgely State Park.
June settlement announced by County Auditor Louis G and County Treasurer Henry J Berg reports 390305.17 in revenue for the month, with March collections totaling 890800.27 across various funds. The record notes 1921 June totals at 392226.95 and lists state taxes, county taxes, school funds, and refunds among the items.
