The city offered a chilly welcome with two girls and little acknowledgment, prompting criticism of Elks and praise for Burg cigar makers who originated the trip. The Burgs’ enterprise drew New Ulm’s cadet band and a large paying crowd, while local papers debated reception and support.

A valley storm destroyed Crone Bros. farm barn north of the city, burying August Woodman and Wu Thawlitz under wreckage but with only minor injuries. Eight horses escaped unharmed as granary and nearby buildings were displaced. Crone’s insured for $3,000 to aid rebuilding.
