A 1918 summary from New Ulm Minnesota transmits a general order by the Provost Marshal General inviting registered men of Brown County to volunteer for the U S Army. The list seeks skilled workers including engineers auto repairers blacksmiths boatmen carpenters cabinet makers caulkers concrete foremen cooks electricians gas enginemen photographers surveyors and many trades. The county board urges widest possible publicity and notes draft will be used if insufficient volunteers are found.
Red Cross workers led by Mrs Ida Ozias organize a tag day in New Ulm around the departure of the draft contingent between the 22nd and 26th of the month. Each tag costs a dime and everyone, including women, is urged to save coins to purchase them. The drive aims to boost mercy work funds and bring cheerful smiles as youths head to service.
In the retreat from Paris at 11 o clock on a Tuesday evening after the western front battle began, German planes attacked Amiens railways. Bombs hit the Paris to Amiens line ahead of us, dawn found us about three miles from Amiens with civilians fleeing. Passengers abandoned the train. one man carried papers to Paris and aimed for London via Havre. Hunger drove us to search for food as we moved toward Boulogne.
A Sanborn farm laborer, John Schmidt, spent a holiday in Sleepy Eye and let liquor lead to theft from hotel guest Honl. Schmidt robbed Honl of a watch and money, was fined 30 dollars plus costs or 60 days, then released after the Sanborn employer paid the fine and took him back home. Police pursued the case to Sleepy Eye and Justice Cutting handled the proceeding.
About five thousand gathered at Lake Title Park near Gaylord for a Fourth celebration. Hon John W Boock of Gibbon and Major Albert Pfaender spoke on patriotism and unity, noting German heritage but urging support for the government and war effort. A Gaylord vs Gibbon baseball game ended 3 to 1 in favor of Gibbon.
Vernon Frederick Christiansen aged three, born New Ulm April 14 1915, died Saturday at 5 34 from tetanus after a finger cut from broken bottle shards while outside pl a sing. Funeral held Sunday at Rice Lake Lutheran Church with Prof Ackermann officiating. burial in Rice Lake Cemetery.
Thousands crowded New Ulm on the nation’s birthday for Riverside Park dedication and Pioneer Lodge ceremony in Turner Park. A Riverside parade, floats, and Home Guard units highlighted a day of patriotic addresses, booths, and dancing, with Mayor Bibner and Anton Dorn among speakers.
Local board received word June 29 to furnish five men for special instruction as auto mechanics carpenters electricians radio operators and sheet metal workers at Dunwoody Institute. Selected are Wm N E Berger Sleepy Eye Ben A Rolwes New Ulm Leo J Seifert Fairmont Alfred J Groebner and Henry Stechmann from New Ulm.
The Minnesota Supreme Court held that A C Townley and Joseph Gilbert did not violate the wartime law by circulating Nonpartisan League literature. The court ruled the language did not discourage enlistments or aid to the war effort and affirmed the validity of the statute’s Section 3 within the act’s title.
