New Ulm Mayor Urges Caution On Sunday Saloons

A Sunday meeting at the Congregational church featured Rev. Wheeler urging enforcement, Rev. Muehlhausen arguing liberty, and Rev. Sauter promoting total abstinence. Mayor Silverson urged moderation, defended enforcing the law, and noted New Ulm as a peculiar community. He warned against forcing unpopular measures and pressed testimony to fight abuse. The crowd voted to ask enforcement, while other notes joke about onions and eyewear follow.

Northwestern Updates Train Schedule on Local Line

A new timecard changes running times on the Northwestern line starting Monday morning. The eastbound morning and evening stub trains are altered with service extended to Sleepy Eye and Mankato Junction, plus a Winona to New Ulm connection. The revised schedule includes trips to Marshall and Tracy with connections at Mankato for Omaha to St Paul.

Fred Briske a Redwood county farmer who deserted his wife and two children to elope with Daisy May Hall a fifteen year old was bound over to await the December grand jury. He is charged with unlawfully taking and carnally knowing a child under sixteen.

Boy nearly burned by fireworks and ill advised punishment

A St Paul boy, after a Fourth of July outing, was severely burned when firecrackers matches and potash exploded in his pockets during a mother’s beating to discipline him. The neighbor helped extinguish flames as a physician was summoned.

Entomologists Seek Cause for Turkey Gnat Damage

Minnesota and South Dakota farmers report swarms blamed on the simulium meridionale. Prof Washburn notes the turkey gnat, a kin to black fly, may be injuring young poultry and cattle, with chickens and turkeys as chief victims. The exact culprit remains uncertain.

Iron Ore Found At Green Isle Vein Discovered Near Farm

Pater Ferrie, a former eastern miner, while locating a well on a Sibley County Bank farm near Green Isle, noticed a peculiar water switch and found iron bearing ore. A geologist confirmed a four foot ore layer, analyzing iron superior to that from St. Louis County. Ferrie has retained St Paul attorneys to protect the claim.

New Ulm drew thousands for Independence Day activities with a stellar parade, German and English speeches, music, street sports and a large fireworks display. Real green bug reaches state near Hastings

State entomologist F L Washburn says the genuine southern grain plant louse toxoptera has been found at Hastings and other fields. He notes the northern form dominates and believes the few southern insects will not seriously injure Minnesota wheat.
