Pope Benedict XV died in the Vatican at Rome at age 67 from pneumonia and heart weakness complicated by bronchial ailment and influenza. Ill for five days, his final hours included unconsciousness and a last whisper of “nonce nexee” as doctors noted no improvement.
Mrs. Fred Brust of this city received a letter from her sister Mrs. George Holliday formerly Miss Mary Sellner of this city now in Clarks Fork Idaho. The Holliday family narrowly escaped drowning when a nearby creek flooded the town two weeks before Christmas. They fled their home as two feet of water arrived and saved only their clothing. They sheltered with locals until Christmas Eve, then moved into a two room shack for temporary lodging. The letter dated January 7 notes snow and unusually cold weather at Clarks Fork though it has since warmed. A Schulke plans to leave for Eastern markets next Sunday to buy spring goods for his stores.
At Creamery Hall in New Ulm the Peoples Co-Operative Association reported a debt reduction of about 1500 dollars over seven months despite a tough season.
