A Middleton drama based on E P Roe’s Barriers Burned Away debuts at Turner Theatre on January 29. The production, praised for improving on the novel, follows a poor but talented youth as wealth and pride test a rich girl’s love, culminating after the Chicago fire.
Largely attended service at Turner Hall with many friends and business associates from New Ulm and nearby towns. Captain Steinhauser spoke on his civic virtues while music by The Second Reg's Band Maennerchor and Alwin's Quartett accompanied the ceremony. The cortege moved from South Second to State Street and on to the city cemetery as local business houses closed for the afternoon.
High School notes announce a season opener next Friday against Blue Earth High. Last year’s close contest ended 16 to 12 in our favor, promising a tough but exciting match. Roster encouragement and 25 cent admissions expected. student sections plan strong support.
Gideon V. Doty, an Indian War veteran and survivor of the Good Thunder campaign, appeals to Gov. A. O. Eberhart for support of Sen. S. B. Works' pension bill for Indian trouble veterans. Doty, cancer-stricken and impoverished, asks legislators to pass the measure soon. He served under Capt. J. J. Lewis and was wounded during Maple River murders.
The New Ulm High School basketball team hosts Blue Earth in the season opener at the Armory Friday evening. Last year New Ulm beat Blue Earth by four points, and fans are urged to attend. The High School orchestra will perform before the game. Mike Schuster Jr. hosted a Thursday armory party with dancing and luncheon. 2nd Regiment Band provided music and caterer F W Eibner supplied the feast.
County Auditor Vogel and County Attorney Erickson thwart extra bid pay, securing a settlement that cuts the contractor’s extras to 14,000, saving petitioners more than five thousand dollars. Officials praise their defense of public funds as New Ulm anticipates Bavarian peasant troupe Berchtesgadener Bauern-Truppe at the Turner Theatre with Der Dorfpfarrer and Almrausch und Edelweiss performances.
Applications are invited for February 1911 admission to the Training School for Nurses at the University of Minnesota. A first grade high school diploma is required. A four month preliminary course costs twenty five dollars, with no tuition for the remaining three years. The entering class size will expand with the Elliott Memorial Hospital’s 120 beds opening in spring. Minimum age is twenty. Application blanks may be obtained from Miss Louise J. Powell, Superintendent.
Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra to perform in New Ulm in February after a successful canvass led by Alma Voedisch. Manager Johnson announced the Turner Theatre date, citing the orchestra as one of the nation’s top three and conductor Emil Oberhoff a leading figure. An engaging program is planned to suit all tastes and expected strong local turnout.
