December 1916 marked the busiest month in New Ulm post office history with overall yearly receipts rising by 8010.23 and all branches showing gains. Postmaster Fred Pfaender cites stamp sales up over 3000, money orders up 3223.06, and 2691 more insured and COD parcels than the prior year though foreign money orders declined due to the European war. About 1200 Minnesota farmers and wives attended the Farm and Home Makers conference in St Paul, with few local attendees.

Hummel Clothing Co-Owner Dissolves Partnership
The clothing firm of Hummel Brothers at 14 North Minnesota Street ends its partnership as August Hummel buys Otto Hummel's full interest including stock and building. The business, founded August 10 1899, will continue under the same name. Otto to focus on private affairs. August had been in other local ventures prior to the dissolution.

Farmers urged to plant good seeds across Minnesota river region
Four large mills in Minnesota mapped a seed wheat drive urging farmers to select high quality seed for next season. The campaign, coordinated by Bert Ball of the Crop Improvement League, will place ads in about fifty newspapers from New Ulm to the Missouri river. Leaders warned that poor seed risks a repeat of current harvest quality, and urged farmers to trim light kernels and improve seed condition. Meanwhile state development talks in St Paul will cover flood control, drainage, tax reform, and the Junior College push, with university officials and civic leaders presenting plans and resolutions.

Total Eclipse of Moon Seen by New Ulm Residents
New Ulm residents stayed up Sunday night to view a total lunar eclipse. The event, first completely visible here since 1910, began at 11:50 p m with Earth’s shadow and ended its total phase at about 3 40 a m Monday.

Union Hospital Aid Society Social Planned at Gebser's Hall
The Union Hospital Aid Society met at the Methodist church and scheduled a members only social at Gebser's hall on Tuesday January 3. About 200 members attend. A program and refreshments will be provided. Last year the society donated 400.10 to beautify hospital grounds and it was voted 200 to finish the work this season.

Springfield Hears Bid for Annual Farmers Fair
Springfield considers bidding for the Sleepy Eye Farmers' Club Fair to become an annual event. A recent Free Press meeting noted possible sites, with another meeting planned.
