Youth Livestock Contest Promotes Meat Production in Brown County
Ren L E Potter calls all Brown County youths ages 10 to 18 to enter a cattle project contest at the Brown County Agricultural Association. Forty contestants may win cash prizes totaling 160 and trips to the Minnesota Live Stock Show in St Paul in fall 1913. Calves must be born after October 1, 1817 and may be any breed. Local breeders and agricultural teachers will assist entrants with pamphlets and visits. The program supports government efforts to boost meat production and may continue after the war.

Edelweiss Club hosts Turnverein and Ladies Society at Turner Hall on Sunday afternoon. The program featured German recitations, English readings, chalk talk, violin solo, humorous reading, and German selections. Supper followed for over a hundred, with dancing until 10 pm and plans for a March social by Zoeglings Verein. Lincoln Day program set at Dr Martin Luther College next Tuesday with Prof Wagner as speaker.

Church Societies Install Officers in Big Holy Trinity Event
About four to five hundred people attended the St. Joseph's and St. Elizabeth's Society installation at the Catholic school house. Officers for St. Joseph's included Pres. William Eibner and Rev. Schlinkert led the ceremonies. St. Elizabeth's installed Mrs. Teresia Sprenger as president and Mrs. Lizzie Stadick as vice president with a program featuring Hofmeister's Orchestra, a Rev Hoffmann address, and performances by St. Cecelian society and Camp Boys numbers. The annual Bangeet was canceled due to high living costs and Prof Henn's illness though he neared recovery.

Fred Spoerhase became owner of the Seiter hotel after a Thursday deal, taking control from Andrew Stenceth of Albert Lea. Spoerhase has managed the hotel for eight years, with plans to remodel and improve to keep the Seiter House, once branded “Like Home,” in the forefront for travelers and commercial men along the M. & St. D. route.

Pioneer Lodge to Be Erected at Turner Hall Grounds
In an adjourned New Ulm Turnverein meeting two new members joined and permission granted for Junior Pioneers to build a log house memorial on Turner Hall Grounds. A site committee was formed with Julius Krause John F Neumann and August Puhlmann. If refused the project would be abandoned. The team will obtain logs to start memorial construction in spring. The Missionary Society of the MBE church will meet with Miss Ida Kohn this week.

Man Falls Thirty Feet at Eagle Mill
William Theil a loader at Eagle Mill fell about thirty feet from a box car on the Northwestern trestle and through the railing to the ground. A snow bank cushioned the fall and he escaped serious injury, only taking a day off for examination before returning to work.

Charles Helle, employed by A. C. Ochs Brick & Tile Co., lost his right hand last Thursday while cleaning a crusher at the old plant. He was alone and cannot explain exactly how the accident happened. a clay chunk allegedly dropped from above and pressed his hand into the machine, leading to wrist amputation.

Scrap aftermath leaves Lampl with broken jaw
Last Tuesday night a fight left Wenzel Lampl in Loretto Hospital with a broken jaw expected to keep him admitted for three or four weeks. Lampl was intoxicated during and after the incident and disputes arise over who delivered the blow.

Exemption Board Receives New Draft Clarifications
The Brown County draft board received a Washington telegram on February 4 directing about 8 600 white men to Camp Dodge beginning February 23 to meet the current quota. The board must finish Brown County s quota from Class I men and speed up exams under both old and new rules. Dr Geo B Weiser and the advisory committee review medical fitness as exams continue through Saturday with strict unfit rulings after that.
