City Council held two special meetings on the city hall deal and approved purchasing the Jos Greobner property for 150 feet frontage on Broadway to place the hall centrally. Architects Tyre and Chapman to revise roof plans, with a further council session pending.
Max Bisoke and August Rost, farm laborers near New Ulm, resisted Bertillon finger printing at first. They were jailed, then consented to prints and were released. Local employers pledge to ensure appearance if needed. The article notes U.S. war expenditures at 39 million dollars daily, with 15 million in Allied loans.
In preparation for the April municipal election, judges of election were appointed for each ward. First ward selections include H. D. Beussmann Fred Hamann and E Berg. Second ward includes Carl Aufderheide Dr Miller and Hugo Gebser. Third ward lists Christ Pilsen and L B Krook with one more judge to be appointed later.
Beginning February 4 registration of German aliens was conducted by Alvin Harmening and Fred Pfaender. A total of 84 were registered, 60 city and 34 rural, with daily tallies listed. Time extended to 8 p m with expectations of only a few more rural registrations. Registrants answered 17 questions on ancestry residence employment and naturalization with details required for each.
Adolph Schulke, successor to G A Ottomeyer, will run an exclusive dry goods and ladies wear store in New Ulm. A grand opening is set for March 2 with a 50 by 70 foot main floor and a 50 by 55 foot basement bargain store. He aims to create a leading regional emporium with a 50,000 dollar stock and new fixtures. Schulke arrives after a career from Bromberg West Prussia and Langdon North Carolina, and also controls Schulke Bradley Company and A Schulke Company of Nekoma. He will focus on New Ulm retailing with staff to serve customers. Louis T. Precht seeks Nicollet County treasurer. Chas J Ries replaces Wm Richter on Route 4. Wm Piaender appointed permanent for Cas Kretach replacement.
G A Ottomeyer, born 1863 in Lippe Detmold, emigrated to New Ulm in 1882 and built a thriving business from a modest start. He opened his first store in 1889 and expanded to own the Ottomeyer block, praising New Ulm citizens and pioneer women for support. He plans a year or more of rest before returning to activity in the city.
A 1901 letter from Newark to Hall Hardware in Minneapolis details freight embargoes west of Chicago and coal shortages in the East, contrasting dire eastern production with the Northwest’s milder winter and ample coal. The note explains shipments blocked by five railroads and a pending embargo renewal, affecting Minneapolis and Atlantic states.
Adolph Amann of New Ulm, serving at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, writes about his first aerial flight in an eight cylinder trainer. He describes takeoff, dives, spirals, and a 5,000 foot flight over Lawton City, with a 600 foot final descent and deafening ears afterward. He anticipates further training in aerial photography and mapping before possible study at a New York university.
Bee keepers from Brown County plan a meeting at New Almst 1 40 in the evening. Francis Jager of Minnesota’s Division of Bee Culture sent notices urging honey production and sugar replacement. Government expert G Mathews will discuss wintering, storage, and summer management for honey production.
