Rush River Judicial Ditch to Drain 10000 Acres in Nicollet

The Rush River project will reclaim 60 thousand dollars of farm land by constructing a judicial ditch in Nicollet and Sibley counties. The Hamlin Construction company dredges twelve miles with a powerful dredge and electric plant, aiming to finish in sixty days. The state and county fund most of the cost, with $10,000 from the state drainage commission and $2,500 from Nicollet County, while the rest is assessed locally. This will reclaim 1200 acres idle since 1901 and drain 40000 acres in nearby tracts.

Enormous losses from suspension of operations

A Chicago Tribune discussion on the hidden cost of fires and insurance. It contrasts layman optimism after a big blaze with the long tail of loss, using a bookbinder and a large factory as examples. It details insured versus uninsured risks, the impact on payrolls, contractors, and customers, and the difficulty of settling amid complex policies. The piece ends with a light note on peculiar public signs observed in New York.
