Auto Hearse Collision At Sleepy Eye R R Crossing
An auto hearse collided with a northbound Northwestern train No 412 at the Sleepy Eye railroad crossing near the waterworks plant. Driver W L Walters and undertaker Jesse Majewski suffered internal injuries and Majewski a fractured limb. The hearse was destroyed. replacements needed and a funeral arranged. Also notes coal shortages threaten New Ulm Greenhouses operations for winter.

The New Ulm high and public schools will open for the fall term on Tuesday, Sept. 7, per a Board of Education decision. Supt. Arnold Gloor will register applicants Sept. 2 at 10 a.m. The district sets 8:50 a.m. start, 1.5 hour noon recess, and 4:30 p.m. close for high and grammar levels, with primary hours 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. German study in grades six to eight becomes compulsory. Loretta C. Johnson granted release due to her mother’s death. Alyce Gannon’s release request denied.

Death summons three pioneers in Brown and Nicollet counties
Vincent Hartmann of New Ulm, a Civil War veteran and last Gettysburg participant from the area, died after a long illness at his North Broadway home. Born in Bohemia and a West Newton farmer, Hartmann enlisted in 1859 and served in the Second Minnesota Artillery and First Minnesota Artillery, fighting in 32 battles. He was a member of Hecker Post No. 48, G A R, and died aged 88. The obituary notes his quiet demeanor and fulfillment of duty. Continued on page 7.
